"Okay." Eliot flops back after failing to solve the puzzle (Watercolor edition)
Painting completed for Amnesty Week, Aug. 11-17, 2025, for the @magiciansfanworksextravaganza challenge Welcome Home!, Week 2, "It's been a long time," with special emphasis on the Mosaic.
I created the drawing for this painting for the original Welcome Home event, same theme, so it seemed only fitting to finish the painting for Amnesty Week.
I love Eliot's sunrise! I know the true answer to the Mosaic is the most beautiful of all, yet I wish their heartfelt efforts could have been rewarded, or at least acknowledged. (Imagine the Mosaic saying: "I love it! It's beautiful! But sorry, no prize.") I know how much time, energy, and heart they must have put into working out each artistic pattern, with so much hope that each would truly solve the puzzle--you can see how much Eliot believes it will work by his prayer to the Mosaic, followed by his deep disappointment when it doesn't work. As an artist, I also feel for them in having to tear out their work so soon after completing it! Such is life...and that is the point... But after spending so long building it, by the way Eliot relaxes when Q promises to write it down, perhaps their Mosaic pattern journal also provides some balm for the artist's soul: at least Eliot's pattern won't be entirely forgotten.
To see this painting with greater resolution/sharpness (if you have the chance to view it on a computer or laptop, you'll get more detail), visit Chapter 16 of Mosaic Haiku on AO3:

Here's the drawing I posted during the original Welcome Home! event, along with more about the theme.

Written for @magiciansfanworksextravaganza's Amnesty Week, continuing from the Welcome Home event earlier this year: Chapter 2 of The Whole Package. Theme: Week 3, "Seasonal/Holiday."
Eliot Waugh didn’t know him, definitely didn’t want him, and probably saw guys like Quentin as…redshirts or something. Maybe NPCs. Yeah, that made sense; he was a shopkeeper in the video game that was Eliot’s life, and all his lines would be garbage like ‘hail, fair traveler, for I have wares to sell.’
He shook his head. Why the fuck was he envisioning this guy as a quasi-medieval quester? Probably because he would look great in hose with a lute slung over his back. Shit. Quentin knew a fourth Witcher rewatch was a bad idea.
(Quentin finds his bravery, the heat he craves, and Valentine's Day treats.)
Thank you so much to PhantomNightjar for making suggestions and looking things over!
Welcome Home! - Week 4 theme: Magical creature—A being from the show or books, or from mythology/folklore, or one you make up.
They stayed as long as they dared, but there were still too many teachers around for the group to get any look without taking undue risks. With a new understanding of the room and the setup, they made plans to return again the next day. It was logical to make their move when they were on solid footing. That was also why Eliot had no intention of waiting until the next day.
Alice sighed for the fifth time since he dragged her away from studying at ten o'clock at night; Margo still had a lot of work to do with this girl. Teachers were nearly inactive after nine at night, which was how they got away with half the things they did, Margo crowning herself queen of Brakebills atop a throne of naked freshmen notwithstanding. It was the prime time, the Witching Hour (not quite). He thought they deserved the advantage. Fogg was in his robe by now, and no one better ask how Eloit knew that, because it involved a covert mission of spying. Eliot never did tell Alice about her aunt and Fogg, mostly because she might not be as ready to help him if she found out Genji Quinn occasionally got naughty with their teacher. It seemed like something that could scar her for life, probably.
Fuck, Eliot needed to know less about the staff, to be honest. One day, it would all run out of his ears or something.
"This isn't a good idea, Eliot," Alice protested in a harsh whisper, but she had yet to actually abandon him, so he took the win.
"We didn't even see anything, though. Don't you want to have a look at their notes?"
The moment of silence was clearly an admittance that she did, "We are coming back tomorrow."
"But the teachers will still be there. Harder to see what they keep scribbling when they are moving," the look on her face told him he had her, but he was very good at convincing people to do what he wanted them to, mainly because he picked his targets well and everything he asked of them was things they secretly wanted to do.
"There was a reason we agreed not to be alone with it. Very little is known about their powers, but it is fairly common in lore for them to have the ability to break the human mind. Mermaids and Sirens allegedly induce madness, which is obviously not ideal." Alice sounded like she was in a lecture hall, "Which is why visits should be conducted while teachers are in the room, as they likely have some idea how to prevent that from happening."
Eliot hummed, glancing around the corner, peering into the darkness, "And yet, here you are."
Her cute little nose wrinkled up. "I didn't say I wouldn't help, I'm only pointing out that it is possible we will regret this."
He slid his fingers through hers and pulled her along with another self-satisfied hum. It was not as if there was no chance for absolute, total, catastrophic failure. Eliot was aware this could be the worst move he ever made, which, honestly, was impressive. Even so, he just had to see that creature again. He wouldn't get too close, just close enough to get a real look.
The two of them slipped inside without much trouble. While there were wards, Alice and Eliot were more than enough to beat them. Alice could have all on her own, and didn't they all just know it too? All the powerful wards were focused less on the human element - If the madness thing was true, he could see why they were focused on that. Still, it was their mistake to assume they were dealing with average students when Alice Quinn attended.
When Alice pulled on his hand, he realized he stopped in his tracks the second he saw the tank; he saw eyes gleam at them in the relative dark like little lanterns. The sight made him shiver, like little electric eels were crawling over him. Hello there, beautiful... Did you miss me? Because I think I missed you.

Warm Up
Welcome Home!
As many or few things as you wish to create are welcome, as long as they fit the event guidelines. Warm Up has a length restriction, but Welcome Home! does not. All our events have themes, but one choice for Welcome Home! allows new additions to existing WIPs that don't fit any other theme.
Amnesty Week takes place on AO3 and Tumblr. We have AO3 subcollections for each challenge, and we'll reblog your work here and gather it in our recap posts for Amnesty Week 2026. We'll also add your work to the recap posts for the original events!
As always, new works and additions to existing WIPs are welcome, as are all types of fanworks (fic, art, edits, vids, cosplay, crafting, podfic, fanmixes, pinboards, moodboards, and more). If you wish to submit individual chapters of the same work as separate entries, that's totally valid! They could be for the same theme, or different ones.
Stay tuned for more specific guidelines! In the meantime...

Our First Year: The Magicians fanworks challenges, Dec. 2024-2025
Magicians Fanworks Extravaganza has been such a delight. The first post went up Oct. 9, 2024, and we held our first challenge from Dec. 1-8, 2024. So it's now been a little over a year's worth of challenges—an incredible thing to share with fellow fans of The Magicians (Lev Grossman, SyFy)! Thank you so much to everyone who participated, is taking the time to enjoy these amazing works by so many creators, and/or has joined us in the Discord to chat with fellow fans.
In case you're looking for some fanworks to enjoy (during long winter nights or any other time), here are all our challenges so far in one place.
Also I'd just like to add an additional thank you to the mods who've helped us and creators who've joined us over the past year-plus.
Finally, keep an eye on our website and/or join our Discord to learn about (or help suggest) future fanworks events for The Magicians! We've got a lot planned for the coming year! (Discord is not required for any challenge.) Details below.
Magicians Fanworks Extravaganza Team
Fully 24 creators have crafted things for us so far—that's extraordinary, especially given how small our fandom is these days! And 6 mods have stepped up to help share these works! Thank you so much to our:
Mods:

Our first four fanworks events have brought us 182 individual entries (some of them containing multiple chapters or types of work). The following breakdown counts entries as they were presented (separately or together), except in 3 cases where types of work presented together were distinct enough to warrant a separate mention.
Art
86 works of art and art chapters, including collage, drawings, edit/graphic, paintings, pinboard, etc. (Art chapters had multiple works.)
Fanmix
1 separately identified fanmix; additionally, several fic chapters identified and/or linked to mood music.
Fic
84 fic or fic chapters (not counting poetry chapters counted below). Sometimes fic with multiple chapters were presented as one entry, so there are more chapters than this number reflects.
Poetry
4 poems or poetry chapters, most of which included quite a number of poems per chapter.
Video
10 video-related works, including animatics, edits, gifsets, vids, etc.
