can you do an m!mage!hawke x anders with the one-word prompt "clarity"?

Hi Anon! I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this but this was a challenge! A welcome challenge though. I hope you like it and feel free to send more if you think about it :) 

Canon divergence in which Hawke questions Anders about what they were doing during the Justice quest and tries to get a little understanding 

Clarity 

Hawke bit his lip as he paced back and forth in front of Anders’s clinic. The flame was out, but he knew the other mage was still inside. Either finishing up on healing salves or working on his manifesto. He looked down at the torn parchment paper he had in his hand and took a deep breath before walking into the clinic and shutting the door behind him. 

“Hawke,” Anders looked surprised to see him but smiled. “I wasn’t expecting you.” 

“I thought I might surprise you,” Hawke smiled a bit as he walked over. “And…I thought we uh…we could talk.” 

“Is something wrong?” Anders frowned. 

Hawke set the paper down on the table and watched Anders pick it up. “It’s a list, with different minerals and powders with drakestone and sela petrae circled.

“It’s your list right? And then we went and we got it,” Hawke said. 

“We did…,” Anders replied. 

“What do they do Anders?” Hawke asked. 

“Hawke…” Anders looked down at the paper. 

“Just, tell me,” Hawke tried not to let his voice crack. 

“Maybe you should sit down,” Anders said as he reached for Hawke’s hand. 

Hawke let Anders take his hand, warm against his own and he sat down across from him at the table. He tightened his grip on Anders’s hand, not wanting to let go. 

“Are they to help with Justice?” Hawke asked. 

“They are,” Anders answered. 

“Don’t lie to me Anders, please,” Hawke looked at him. 

“I’m not lying,” Anders told him. “They are to help Justice….but, not in the way I told you.” 

“Then what are they for?” Hawke asked. “You can tell me.” 

“They’re explosives…when you combine them together,” Anders answered. 

“Why do you need explosives?” Hawke asked. 

“I…I can’t tell you that,” Anders answered. 

“What are you talking about? Of course, you can,” Hawke replied. “You can tell me anything.” 

Anders shook his head. “Because if I tell you then…then it implicates you. And-” 

“I’m already implicated, Anders!” Hawke pulled his hand back and dropped his head into his hands and took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I don’t, I didn’t come here to get mad or yell, I just, I want to understand.” 

He looked at him. “Tell me so I can understand, so I can…I can help.” 

“I can’t,” Anders shook his head. “I love you, Hawke. More than, more than anything in this world, but I can’t. And I’m sorry if that makes you angry, but I’m doing this for us, and for people like us. For mages everywhere.” 

“Can you at least promise me that no one will get hurt?” Hawke asked. “Are you able to at least promise that? Or is Varric’s book going to end with the to us running off together, two renegade mages on the run?” He tried to smile. 

Anders looked down at his hands. 

“You can’t promise anything can you?” Hawke asked. 

“I’m sorry,” Anders answered. 

Hawke sniffed and nodded. “Right…guess that answers that then.” He braced his hand on the table as he leaned over and kissed Anders cheek. “If you decide to change your mind…I’ll listen, and I’ll help, if you need me to help you. Whatever it is, I’ll understand.”
