Having Paris thoughts. When Benji passes out in the Vault, the way she wakes him up by pulling/twisting his ears seems so... innocent. Especially when you consider that Paris most certainly has a lot of experience of keeping someone awake during, say, torture.
So it must mean that she's deliberately trying to use methods that would hurt him the least. She wouldn't even slap him. She is in a completely new for her territory of to saving a life, of being gentle. And she's trying so hard.
Ok, look, I normally hate redemption arcs for evil female characters because they always follow the same thing
There’s a child. Or a love interest who demands she become ‘good’
But not Paris. Her journey to one of the good guys did not demand she change at all. She stayed the same deadly, revenge focused character she had already been - and everyone around accepts that. No one tries to change her. Ethan promises she will get a chance to kill Gabriel and gives that chance to her. Benji adores her exactly as she is. When she says ‘I kill people’ his response is not ‘but you don’t do that any more’ or ‘you have to change’ it’s ’I can work with that’. He doesn’t want her to change. He won’t ask her to change. He can work with her exactly as she is.
It’s was so refreshing. At every step Paris makes her own choices and no one pushes her to be someone else.
And there is no child and no ‘hero’ character for her to fall in love with. Her journey from bad guy - who thoroughly enjoyed the work - to one of the good guys - who still really enjoys the work - is entirely her own choice. And her love for Benji and the others is not a demand from them, but a response for a mentor who doesn’t demand things, who gives her trust and care, treats her kindly and will not betray her.
I just love that. It all could have been so predictable but Paris stayed Paris all the way.
And Benji did his usual thing of getting the angry and dangerous and damaged character to love him. He did it with Ethan in GP. He did it with Ilsa in Fallout and now he’s done with it Paris
