I still haven’t played Firewatch, so I wasn’t aware how it’s map and navigation mechanics work – but I was instantly enamoured of the idea of playing it cooperatively with a navigator teammate. At once, it invokes Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes’ bomb defusal manual, and Miasmata’s more realistic mapping and orienteering, both mechanics that I find very appealing and fascinating. I also don’t know the extent to which navigational challenges are really meant to be part of Firewatch – it’s primarily billed as a narrative game, after all – but my instincts tell me that it would most likely be enhanced by this sort of complication.
