Happy birthday to Philly artist Micah Danges, whose playful sculptural objects are on view in “New Grit: Art & Philly Now” until August 22. Using photography as a point of departure, the artist visually manipulates photographs and then experiments with non-traditional materials, such as mesh fabric. In these large-scale works of greenery and windows, Danges creates tension between the image and surface through the transparency of the mesh, while emphasizing photography’s role as a window onto the world.

Happy birthday, Eileen Neff! A lifelong resident of Philadelphia, Neff is interested in the poetic gap between objects and their representation. Her work, currently on view in “New Grit: Art & Philly Now,” playfully invites us to question the experience of viewing nature and art: a store-bought plastic hedge (which the artist calls a “real fake hedge”) sits in front of a photograph of a window; a photograph of a bird is nestled high above you on the ceiling; and a photograph of the great outdoors is, upon closer look, actually the inside of a diorama at the Academy of Natural Sciences.
