Walk the Line premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on 4 September 2005, before its official release in November.
Johnny Cash approached James Keach about making a film of his life after appearing in an episode of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman in 1993 that Keach directed (and starred Keach's wife Jane Seymour). Seymour interviewed Cash a number of times, which became the basis of a script by Gill Dennis in 1997. After unsuccessfully getting a studio interested, Keach approached James Mangold, who re-wrote the script with his wife Cathy Konrad (incorporating elements of biographies of Cash), and began pitching the film in 2001.
Walk the Line was a commercial and critical success. Nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Jaoquin Phoenix), Best Film Editing (Michael McCusker), Best Costume Design (Arianne Phillips), and Best Sound Mixing, Reese Witherspoon received the film's only Oscar for Best Actress.

Remember her partying with Oscar?
- We're not really used to... - A woman? I suppose you think I should be back in Darwin, at the church fête or a lady's whatever you call it. Well I will have you know, I am as capable as any man. - Guests. We're not used to guests is what I was about to say but now that you mention it I happen to quite like the women of the outback.
