I’ve been thinking more about how in the movie, Arnie’s parents survive. Unlike in the book where they die. I know it’s probably because they ran out of time and couldn’t add anymore scenes. But I think there’s an in-universe explanation about why they survive.

Christine attacks people she doesn’t like. She attacks Leigh out of jealousy. The bullies obviously for destroying her and bullying Arnie. Darnell because he sits in her. I guess an in-universe reason why Dennis and Junkins don’t die is because Christine didn’t have a good opportunity to kill them. When Dennis tries to break into her, she’s still being repaired. And Junkins is always shown in the middle of the day, in public places where there’s multiple witnesses. And specifically with Dennis I don’t think there’s enough motivation for Christine to try and get him. Until the end when she tries to kill Dennis and Leigh, because they’re trying to get rid of her. Especially after Arnie dies in the fight.

I think in the movie the same applies to Regina and Micheal, in that Christine doesn’t see them as a threat to get rid of them. But I think less because she doesn’t have an opportunity to get them. Or see them as enough of a threat. But more because Arnie’s personally dealt with them. @dennisguilders said it perfectly that after the dinner scene they stopped trying to talk any sense into Arnie about Christine. He may not have fully meant to scare his parents and become the controlling one. But it doesn’t really matter, there’s no need to get rid of them because now not only are they scared of Christine but Arnie as well. So they’re not going to interfere.

The fact that this coming full circle, from the moment Micheal killed that guy in the clearing to Ernest letting it happen in the snow - whoah. Especially after the way things have gone. Micheal learned what it means to take a life and regretted it, while Ernest learned to kill to be with his family.

I read through the entirety of the book for Christine today, and maybe I’m just missing something. But was Regina going through menopause for the entire book?

I don’t remember the exact details, but she has a full blown meltdown after slapping Arnie and she was drinking at that point. (I had to reread the paragraph several times over because I thought Arnie had slapped her at first) And not long after, Micheal mentions she’s having really bad pains and going to the doctors about it. She’s described as having flushes and cries throughout the book. Literally a good chunk of her appearances or when she’s talked about mentions her crying or being on the verge of some emotional meltdown. As well as a lot of stuff regarding her is like her fear of getting old.

I know a decent part of it is Arnie’s drastic personality change, Christine and Lebay that’s causing her emotional distress. As she ends up having problems with sleep deprivation and depression. Which she considers going to the doctors for medication to deal with it. But a lot of the stuff she’s described as doing seems to align with symptoms of menopause.

A little queer retrospective this morning.

Whenever I hear the term “highly sensitive person,” I think of the movie At Home At The End Of The World. Specifically, about Collin Farrell’s character… who may be one of the most sensitive and pure characters of all time.

Is it because of trauma? Childhood use of LSD? How does he maintain his vulnerability despite being beaten by life? The rest of the characters grow shells (as we instinctively do) to protect themselves, yet he remains soft like a newborn.

At Home At The End Of The World is about two young boys who befriend each other and become inseparable… until they’re not.

One of them goes off to New York City, to figure himself out (pretty typical gay pilgrimage of that era) while the other stays quietly at home. Circumstances reunite the two in the city, where they end up sharing an apartment with a colorful older woman.

This movie captures the 1980s so perfectly.

The complicated yet beautiful relationship that develops between the three characters is so natural. They all needed something from each other. It’s a story about connections, about impermanence, about the difficult things we need as well as the simple things.

I loved both the movie and the book it’s based on. And it turned me into a life-long Collin Farrell fan cause pulling off that surreal, gentle performance is not something most actors could accomplish.

What can I say? It’s moody outside and I’m moody inside and just thinking about moody things. For the record, I identified most with the frustrated gay guy… he definitely had the internal irritability and critical eye of a Capricorn. I’ve had a few highly sensitive friends in my life and I too was utterly charmed by them while simultaneously being annoyed.
