The Isetta was one of the most successful microcars produced in the post-World War II era, during the years when cheap short-distance transportation was essential. Although the structure was built in Italy, it was built in a number of countries, including Spain, Belgium, France, Brazil, West Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The owner of Iso, Rivolta Renzo, decided to build a small car for mass consumption. In 1952, engineers Ermenegildo Preti and Pierluigi Raggi developed a small car that used a scooter engine and named it Isetta, an Italian short for Iso.
