Destiny: Personal Thoughts - Life After Gjallahorn or Exotics and You.
Well Bungie did it. They gave people what they wanted. Gjallarhorn is currently available for sale by Xur this weekend. Until 2am PST tomorrow night (Sunday August 16th) you can buy this coveted and way overpowered weapon for 23 strange Coins. I have a feeling that the queue for the Level 32 Weekly Heroic Strike will jump and a lot of patrol runs will be made to farm Coins, and engrams in the hopes of Coins dropping at the Cryptarch between now and then.
So assuming you are one of those people who have already snagged this soon to be reduced bosskiller weapon, here's a question for you. What now?
The problem with Destiny's current drop rate for Exotics and current player culture, is that this weapon went from being a ridiculous option for an exotic to the key through the slog of bullet sponges that Strikes and Raids contained. It also quickly became the barrier to entry for many players. Don't have a Gally? Well you can't run the raid. How do you get the Gally? Well it sometimes drops in raids, nightfalls, or pvp. So basically if you didn't have this weapon finding people to run the end game content with you to try and obtain this weapon was tough. Well now (at least for the next 3 weeks or so) that will not be a problem. We ALL have (or will have) Gjallarhorns. So we can all try to melt down the raid bosses and get all that sweet gear that....will....soon be replaced...by um....other new gea....um yeah.
And now we arrive to the place post-Gjallarhorn and Pre-Taken King life. Early reports and articles from Game Informer have indicated that while Legendary and Exotic Weapons will dictate light level which will dictate barrier to entry on some quests and activities in Year 2, those reports have also said that new Common, and Uncommon (Greys and Green) items out classes some of the current Legendary Raid gear. Not that we should go scrap all our exotics and legendaries yet. We shouldn't. They will still be relevant, but for the sake of Vault and inventory space we will have to make some decisions at some point and that also means, does everyone want that Gjallarhorn being the pinnacle of their load out, or do you want something that really plays to your strengths and goals?
When I first started playing Destiny, I fell in love with the MIDA Multi-Tool. I saw it on a stream and watched as this player was taking advantage of everything this gun had. When I loaded in, the MIDA was my first Exotic target and I got it. It took a lot of coin farming and waiting for Xur to finally sell it but I got it. I didn't care that it didn't drop after some epic battle. I got that weapon. I learned how to use this gun for fun and harder to achieve fights. But then the exotic envy took over. I wanted Thorn, Last Word, Gjallarhorn, Icebreaker...all the weapons that you could use to bulldoze your way through PvE and PvP content. All the while getting frustrated when I would net exotics like Red Death, Patience and Time (irony) or Suros Regime. Everything but what I wanted.
But after awhile I quit stressing that RNG and Xur wasn't giving up what I wanted and started to look at how I was performing. Why didn't people want to rely on me in Fire Teams. How was I using my current gear? And I found something out after I got Thorn. I didn't like it.
As a Hand Cannon and Scout Rifle user I really appreciate precision hits. The ability to quickscope and land that extra damage thanks to skill and awareness. Not blanket damage cover. Thorn required little skill for me to get kills in PvP and even Cabal fights felt a bit cheaper. I didn't feel like I was earning these kills but letting the gun get them for me. So I switched up to the first gun I ever really waited and worked to get. The MIDA. And after that, every kill in PvP became harder. I had to get those shots in when I could and accept that it would take 7 precision hits to take down an opponent with careful planning and arena awareness. As a result every kill felt worth it. My weapon didn’t net me that Double Down or Enforcer medal. My own skills did. It was after that I changed up my Exotic goals in destiny. I was not going for the gold. I was going for the silver joy of Hawkmoon.
Yep. The coveted Playstation exclusive gun. 13 rounds in the chamber, a random chance to get 1 to 3 extra damage stacks and no really big gimmicks. This was a gun that would reward my practice and effort, or so I hoped. My plan now was to obtain a legendary hand cannon with "Okay" stats and perks, and learn how to use it to my advantage. That way I could learn how to use this weapon. I netted both a Fulcrum and Her Mercy and rolled them at the Gunsmith until I got the perks that I wanted. Not what was recommended. I kept using these guns while mat farming, and switched up to exotic weapons only during Prison of Elders and Nightfalls. It took some time but RNG was gracious and I got the Hawkmoon. I spent the next 5 days leveling it up and adjusting to the gun's stats and recoil, and now it is one of my favorite guns to use because it doesn't reward with instant enemy melt. I still have to work and think and plan. This feels like an item that evolves me as a player based on how I play the game, not because of the overall playerbase popularity..
The best part of this journey was that when other exotics landed that weren't Top 10 items, I wanted to really see how they worked. Necrochasm has been amazingly fun to use, and I just found a Monte Carlo which looks to suit my Titan in PvP amazingly. Then there's the Invective, which is perfect for close combat madness even if it isn't one of the currently dominating shotguns. Finally there was Truth, which honestly I've had more fun learning to use Truth and wanting to see what its tracking can do over the thought of what Gjallarhorn can do. Truth suits my current play style much better than the Gally.
And now that I have my wishlist of items (Gally, Truth, all 3 exotic handcannons) I am seeking out the items that I think will continue to evolve me as a player. No Land Beyond, IceBreaker, Thunderlord, maybe even go dig out a Revelator 3 from the Tiger playlists. So that way when that time comes in Year 2 when I need to take a hard look at the inventory and have to decide, Gjallahorn or Truth. Icebreaker or Patience and Time. Suros Regime or the Monte Carlo. Which one do I say goodbye to, and which ones define me as a player.
I'm still gonna enjoy the hell out of all my Power Weapons, and the sooner I get that Gally leveled, I will be headed to go give Skolas a piece of my mind. So don't take this as Gjallarhorn hate, or any Power Weapon hate. Take this as simply another player saying, okay you got it...now where do you go from here? Where are you going to let this weapon take you and how are you gonna grow?
Love the Ballerhorn, but don't forget that first golden exotic that really tempted your eye and put you on this path to obtain some amazing gear. Don't forget what it made you feel like when you got it.
Don't forget to be your own legend.
