and this is a thing i always think about in regards to street harassment, as there's always that handful of people riled by the fact women might not like benign compliments
because it doesn't bother me when women or gay men take time out of their day to offer a compliment, but from anyone else, it's almost always unwelcome
i mean, really think about what it means when some randomass man stops you and says he finds you "beautiful"
my first thought is always, "okay? AND?" because really, to me, it tells me nothing except that he finds me visually pleasing, and being a visual/sexual pleasure is not something i'm interested in
and i have no doubt that some men really do mean it as nothing more than a harmless compliment (and even so - think about the nature of that compliment), but what i've seen of the machinations of male attraction and how men express it even subconsciously, spoils any chance of my being anything but repulsed
