Dear Hanson, fire your marketing team.
Siiiigggh. Okay, so during 2017 Hanson has actually had a lot of exposure in mainstream culture. Just to name a few:
The Washington Post ran a huge profile on the band.
NPR ran a positive review of ‘I Was Born’
NPR also featured the band on its Tiny Desk Concert series
And countless other media outlets have featured coverage of the 25th anniversary tour and the new Christmas album.
HOWEVER, I am seriously so fucking annoyed that the band is not making the most of all of this exposure. They should have had A NEW ALBUM OUT THIS YEAR. Not a goddamn greatest hits. Not even a Christmas album (well, I actually love that they have a Christmas album out, but that alone is not going to really leverage the exposure the band has gotten this year).
THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD A NEW GODDAMN ALBUM OUT. Lots of people who forgot about Hanson for years are now being reintroduced to the band, and their most recent album is over four years old. This is ridiculous, Hanson!
Look, I get that Hanson does things their own way, and I admire that. And at least they released SOMETHING this year. But I want two things: 1) For people just now discovering (or re-discovering) the band to have new, original, non gimmicky (aka not just about a holiday) music to hook them in and make them into real fans, and 2) For the band to keep challenging themselves to release new music and go even deeper into their craft (instead of just regurgitating what they’ve already done for a lousy greatest hits album).
Hanson needs to fire their marketing team, because if they knew even the first thing about marketing they would have insisted on having an album of new original songs this year. By the time the band finally does get around to releasing a new album, all this ‘buzz’ they’re experiencing right now will have died down.
