au where neil runs away w todd instead
ok so earlier i found this
"Disney acquired Schulman's script for Dead Poets Society in 1987, about two years after he wrote the original draft. As soon as they bought the script, they sent Schulman a stack of notes about how they would like to change the script. Most notably, they thought Schulman could rework it as a period piece about dancing teenagers. They even had a title picked out: Sultans of Swing. Naturally, this sent Schulman into a panic."
and now i’m like...au where all the boys are dancers
glimpse to the past (fuck me up)
Send “Glimpse to the past” For a random memory from my muses childhood.
The first time he truly realizes his parents don’t love him, he’s ten years old. It’s a couple days before the start of the school year, and his brothers preparing to leave for his first year at Welton.
His parents couldn’t be happier, their eldest, favorite son is going to be attending one of the “best schools in the country” for the next six years. But Todd feels sick. He knows this is just another weight on him to do better.
He knows what a disappointment he’ll be if he doesn’t make it into the same school next year. He also knows he probably won’t make it. Todd’s never been particularly horrible at school (Then again, maybe he was. He was pretty horrible at most things) but he was nowhere near as SMART and PERFECT as Jeffrey was.
When it’s time to bring Jeffrey to the school for the beginning-of-the-year ceremonies and preparations, they leave Todd at home. They’ll be gone nearly the entire day, he knows. But before they go, Todd’s father says something to him. And that’s when it really sinks in.
He stands beside Todd, who’s sitting on the floor in the living room with his knees to his chest. He doesn’t bother getting down kneel besides Todd or get on his level before speaking to him. He would never do that.
“Do you know how much all the chemicals in the human body would be if you bottled them up and sold them raw?”
To this, Todd looked up in confusion and shook his head.
“Five dollars and ninety-eight cents.” His father answers, and then continues. “That is exactly how much you’re worth until you can prove otherwise. Five ninety- eight. Your brother’s proved himself. He’s done well and he’s now going to be attending a school for some of the country’s best and brightest.”
Todd lowers his head again, though he knows this will only disappoint his father more. He can’t maintain eye contact when he should.
“You better work to improve yourself every single day if you want to get anywhere in life. Otherwise, that’s all you’ll be ever worth, five ninety-eight.”
Todd doesn’t reply, instead he’s fighting to hold in his tears until after his family has left, if only to avoid hearing any-more about how weak and useless he is for just sitting there and crying. He hears his father sigh and imagines him shaking his head (more disappointment) before finally heading out the door to meet his mother and brother in the car and drive off.
When he’s gone, Todd let’s himself burst into tears.
