“Well, the good news is, Miss Paige was unsuccessful at killing either the eilgard, or Riona,” Miera led with. There was no point in small pleasantries. “Unfortunately, I wasn’t getting any openings to kidnap her either. You should be proud of me though, I warned the apostate about Miss Paige and it seemed to work in our favor. The whole lot of them prepared all evening to ward off Miss Paige and it was quite effective. It’s why I didn’t come back sooner, I was making sure there wasn’t any interference. But Miss Paige is likely back with the Council now…”
Thea held up a hand, a look of confusion on her face. Miera accepted the pause because she didn’t exactly want to think about Miss Paige’s magic anyway. It made her want to vomit and then carve out some of her own insides.
“You sought out the apostate?” she asked.
“You’re stuck on that one?” Miera asked. “All right. Well, it wasn’t exactly planned. We bumped into each other on the train car. So I told her exactly what I expected out of the conversation and that I wasn’t going to hurt her since I didn’t want to be on Cass’s bad side but also they should be on the lookout for an assassin. Did the job well, I should think.”
“You said Miss Paige has returned to the Council?” Cael asked.
Asking the practical questions now.
“Yeah, she teleported right out of the eilgard’s bedroom after he shot her. I doubt it was fatal.”
“And where were you?” Thea asked.
“So I stayed as clear as I could initially, hoping that if either Riona or the eilgard sensed me that I’d be able to talk my way out of it again, or, failing that, teleport out. I scouted out where they were staying, avoided Miss Paige at all costs, and kept my head down until I sensed this awful ritual…” Miera grimaced as she tried not to vomit.
Thea and Cael, too, were unable to keep looks of disgust off of their faces. But Miera could tell from their eyes that they knew what the ritual was.
