The Life Story of Mikao Usui – Founder of Reiki
Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865, in the village of Taniai, in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. He was raised in a Buddhist family and from a young age showed great interest in spiritual practices, healing methods, and personal growth. He studied kiko (a Japanese form of Qi Gong), martial arts, and various forms of meditation.
As he grew older, Usui sought deeper meaning in life and dedicated himself to spiritual discipline. He traveled extensively and studied different healing traditions, philosophies, and religious texts – including Buddhism, Taoism, and Christian teachings.
The Spiritual Awakening on Mount Kurama
The turning point in Usui’s life came when he undertook a 21-day spiritual retreat on Mount Kurama, near Kyoto. He practiced fasting, meditation, and prayer. On the 21st day, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening – a moment of enlightenment. He felt a powerful energy enter his body and mind, and he realized he had gained the ability to heal through his hands.
This energy became what we now know as Reiki – a Japanese word that means “spiritual life force energy.”
The Creation of the Usui Reiki System
After this transformative experience, Usui began to share Reiki with others. He founded a school in Tokyo in 1922 called the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. He taught that Reiki was not only a healing technique but also a spiritual path for self-development and inner peace. His method included five principles, hand-healing techniques, and meditation.
His Teachings and Legacy
Usui taught Reiki to over 2,000 students and trained about 20 teachers to carry on his work. One of his students, Chujiro Hayashi, played a key role in systematizing the practice and spreading Reiki further, eventually to the West through Hawayo Takata in Hawaii.
Mikao Usui passed away on March 9, 1926, but his teachings continue to touch millions of lives around the world. His legacy lives on in the many forms of Reiki that have developed, all rooted in his original vision of healing, harmony, and connection with universal life energy.

⛩️🧘🏽♂️🤗 Here is a picture of the new memorial stone for Mikao Usui in Taniai, his birthplace. There are several stones. On the left is a summary of his life. The big stone in the middle is the actual memorial stone. Behind it is another stone with the names of the donors. And to the right in front of it is a small stone that resembles Mount Fuji. Since the surface is smoothly polished, I assume that this is there to touch it instead of the actual memorial stone. But maybe someone of you knows what the little smooth stone is for. Then feel free to write a comment here. 🌞🤓🙏🏽 #reiki #usui #usuimemorial #taniai #mikao #markhosak #shingonreiki (hier: 岐阜県山県市) https://www.instagram.com/p/B84F24_oLJY/?igshid=8erom6yme3ur
