It was just after midnight when your phone buzzed on the nightstand, annoyed and tired you swung your hand over and reached for it. This call better be good… Your heart skipping a beat as you red the name that was glowing on the screen,
Simon is calling…
“Hey,” you say softly, slowly sifting up in your bed.
“Hi, luv.” His voice hummed, a little rough, like he had a cold, but so familiar it warmed up your chest. “Did i wake you?”
“Doesn’t matter,” you reply quickly, hoping he would stay on the phone with you all night. You gripped onto the phone for dear life, like it was its fault they were apart. “Im just glad to hear from you.”
He chuckled softly, but you could hear the exhaustion behind it “i don’t have long, but i wanted to hear your voice.”
Swallowing the lump that was beginning to form in your throat, “Are you okay? Eating enough? Sleeping?”
“Im alright, mum.” He teased, causing a warm chuckle to escape your chest. “Thinking about you a lot tonight.”
Your heart ached at his words, you wish you could just teleport to wear he was and take him far far away from all this gun fighting and war. As to your response, you wanted to say something comforting, something meaning full. All that came out was “I think about you every night.”
A pause, then, “i miss you. Ill be home soon, i promise.”
Tears weld up in your eyes as the lump in his throat begin to choke him, “ill be here waiting.”
“Always?”
“Always.” You repeated.
When the call ended, you stared at your home screen. A picture of you both that a friend took. He misses you more than words could say and moments like this—hearing his voice—makes all of this worth it.
