What is your biggest struggle with your studying? - Is it structure? - Is it accountability? - Results > Excuses - Link in bio for tonight’s workshop on Mechanics of Material - #engineering #feexam #engineerlife #prepineer #millennialengineer #civilengineering (at Maryland)

What is the most important part of getting a job? - Is it your GPA? Extracurriculars? Leadership? Connections? - I was a resident assistant in two dorms at the University of Florida, Mallory a standard coed dorm, and then Hume the all honors coed dorm - Which do you think had the most students go on to get high paying jobs? - Thinking back to the engineering students who made $70k+ within 3 months of graduating, a lot of them had an amazing college experience - It is interesting that the people who are in leadership or well liked tend to have social intelligence and common sense - To get where they are today, no one asked them what their GPA was or to be honest even what their extracurriculars were - I have a friend who brews beer with a 2.7 gpa and makes close to $90k and I have a friend who had a 3.9 GPA with a boring transportation job making $45k<, both with engineering degrees from University of Florida - Why do we not ever talk about social intelligence and common sense? - In my college experience, I focused on making money, having a good time, all with the mindset "C's get degrees" - I never went to class, but instead help multiple jobs at @publix , resident assistant at @ufhousing for two years, landlord of an apartment, and even 2 startups particularly @coursehero - Class was just an errand and as long as I got the grades who cared? Attendance grades nothing relevant to your understanding of material, execution does. - Outside of class and going out, I focused on learn how technology worked, how the startup world worked, but most of all I focused educating myself on the skills they dont teach you in the classroom - So flash back to career fair, I am trying to learn that first internship and co-op - Do you know what got me the job? - The manager I interviewed at @duke_energy noticed I had worked at a grocery store like he did in college - To be honest though, what I learned the most from my 3 co-ops was that the 9-5 workplace was not for me - I was exposed in my college experience to the power of the startupworld - My college experience helped realize I am a #millennialengineer and I can define my career 💯 (at University of Florida)
What is the hardest class you enrolled in during college? - As a Civil Engineer, I did not do well with chemistry, circuits, and all things that arent the sum forces =0 - I remember my freshmen fall at U of Florida when I took chemistry 1 for engineers - Just like at any school, chemistry is a weed out class - But man at UF they really loved making it super hard - It may not have helped we also won the National Championship that semester, but boy did I get #powned by Dr. Keaffaber, who prided himself on telling students they were not smart enough to do engineering - You know for awhile I though he was right. I had struggled with every exam, and on the exam before the drop deadline, I got a 19% - Needless to say I should have just guessed, and I decided to drop the class - In the spring, I switched my degree to business, and decided engineering was not for me - But my girfriend at the time (now wife), said you are smart enough to do anything you choose - So I got back into engineering in the fall, got a B- in chemistry and moved on with my life - Now I tutor engineers in chemistry for the #feexam - I can tell you that no one needs to know all of the tricks and traps they test you with - Why do we let one class, GPA, or an exam define our lives - Looking back now, I will tell you that my engineering friends with the best GPA did not get the best jobs - The engineers who were well rounded and had social intelligence got the internships, co-ops, and desired full time opportunities - If you define yourself with a number or single accomplishment, you probably think you need straight A's to make it big - The truth is were live in the greatest time ever to be alive, and the most successful ones are not the ones who end up doing calculations in a cubicle for 40 years - If you are a #millennialengineer then you need to look ahead and not behind, and dont be afraid to try something that has nothing to do with your degree - Take a leap of faith and hope a net catches you! When approaching a CHEMICAL EQUATION, it is important you understand the difference between COEFFICIENTS and SUBSCRIPTS. . The COEFFICIENT is a WHOLE NUMBER INTEGER placed in front of an ELEMENT, COMPOUND, or MOLECULE, and denotes the AMOUNT of MOLES for a particular ELEMENT, COMPOUND, or MOLECULE. . The SUBSCRIPT is placed behind the ELEMENT, MOLECULE, or COMPOUND and denotes the NUMBER of ATOMS in that GROUPING. . To BALANCE an EQUATION, COEFFICIENTS are used to MODIFY the NUMBER of MOLES of REACTANTS and/or PRODUCT, such that MASS is CONSERVED on BOTH SIDE of the CHEMICAL EQUATION. . CHANGING the COEFFICIENT changes the TOTAL NUMBER of MOLES of that ELEMENT or MOLECULE. . The SUBSCRIPT, however cannot be changed, as altering a SUBSCRIPT would change the MOLECULE itself. . . . . . . . #chemistry #chemistrysucks #engineering #engineeringstudent #balancingchemicalequations #apchemistry #ibchemistry #apchemistryproblems #molecules #science #technology #stem #millennialengineer #coefficient #grouping #subscripts #engineeringstudent #engineeryourfoundation #conservationofmass (at Leigh Hall)
