Miranda is uncharacteristically uncomfortable in her clothes and her body, shying away from James when he attempts to comfort her.

  James saw Thomas repeatedly throw her worried glances, a question in his eyes, only for Miranda to smile and shake her head minutely. Frowning, James studied her. James had precious little knowledge of women’s fashion, but he knew enough know to see she was wearing a softer jump as opposed to her usual stiff, shaping stay; she was curiously bundled up, with a handkerchief around her neck covering her chest, and another scarf hanging off her elbows which she frequently gripped and huddled into, as if she wanted to hide herself. James could feel his jaw tensing in worry as he observed Miranda, how she smiled politely but never engaged in conversation, how she kept as away from the light as possible.

i have no idea if there would even be anyone interested, but after i'm done with my current black sails wip (update: its at 6k now) i want to write a canon-verse soulmate au where flint has 4 soulmarks (for thomas, miranda, silver, and madi) which is unheard of so everyone who sees them is like ???!!???!????!!?

i dont have much more clue what will go on but everyone will live and everyone will be happy and thats all i care about

Pre-raphaelite and art niveau!

Pre-Raphaelite: Which book would you like to see turned into a film? A difficult question! The last two novels I’ve read seem almost impossible to adapt to the screen! But if I could cheat a little, I would say that I’d give my soul for Guillermo del Toro if he decided to make a series out of The Mysteries of Udolpho! Apart from that, I’d love a faithful adaptation of Carmilla and of Dracula! (Like no Mina and Dracula romance, and no name changing, role changing, end changing etc for Carmilla, just, make it as faithful as possible!!) 

Art Nouveau: When were you last at the theatre? I’m not sure if the question means the movie theatre, in which case, I’ve been there last week, or the theatre, in which case, it’s been two years! (a long time, I know, but I’ve been to the opera once since so I feel like I’ve not lost two years completely aha!)

Not heard the Fathoms Deep interview with Luke Arnold and I’m not sure I’m going to (mainly because I have a very difficult time listening to the ladies because I’m hypersensitive to high laughters on radio and so I tend to miss half of what they’re saying) but I’m genuinly confused about the supposed hate Luke Arnold is supposed to have received from people in the fandom. I mean, come on: if you’re sending hate of any kind to an actor/creator/writer/musician/und so weiter, you’re obviously not a part of the fandom. You’re a person with severe issues, hurting innocent people because you don’t realise celebrities are human beings. That’s not being a fan, that’s being an asshole. End of fucking story. Then, when it comes to the silverflint and madisilver matter. I didn’t even know what the term shipping meant before I stumbled across this fandom about a year ago so I, as some people might know, had no clue about things like shipping wars and what terms like “otp” meant. I still have to look up a third of fandom slang and I feel old. I didn’t ship silverflint, because I simply didn’t see what silverflint shippers saw. Which is a whole other thing than being 100% sure it’s not there. I was genuinly interesting in seeing what they saw, but failed. But when the show was over, I was sitting in my couch, teary-eyed over all my sweet, murderous pirates and couldn’t stop thinking about Silver’s expression. That face when he spoke to Madi about his actions, didn’t leave me. And then I read what the creators said, that there were more beneath the surface of Silver’s and Flint’s relationship. To me, it’s important to separate fanfiction and shipping from the original work, and not read in stuff that is clearly not presented by the creators. But as soon as Steinberg and Levine spoke more about the silverflint relationship, I could make sense of the silverflint shipping I’d earlier failed to see.  Silvermadi was, for obvious reasons, far easier to ship because the ship was sailing on screen for all to see, but the last scene we have of them, their relationship as it is, is breaking apart. Yes, they will still remain together, so they somehow manage to fix it, but as the creators also said: their relationship aint gonna be a very happy one. That’s their peak high of emotional closeness and in a way no less destructive than Eleanor’s and Vane’s relationship. Silver and Madi love each other, yes. But they are not close, they will never be, and they don’t come first for each other. Madi has her people and Silver, even if he’s no aware of it, has Flint. Remember, this is a show where relationships are deep, complex and definately not always are about two persons. The pirate society was known for polyamory, gay and bi and interracial relationships, so what’s the big deal here? Silver loving Madi, doesn’t rule out him being in love with Flint too. Flint loving Thomas didn’t rule out him loving Miranda or falling in love with Silver. Madi loving Silver, doesn’t mean she loves her people more. Anne loving Jack, didn’t stop her from falling for Max - or Jack from accepting that.  Elenor loving Vane, her father and Max, didn’t stop her from putting her own feelings aside and both end up hurting and getting hurt all the way until her end. And Billy loving the crew that was all his world, his family, after being taken from his parents as a kid, and then being torn between the relationships with Flint, Gates, his brothers and Silver, are all reasons why he ended up on a dark path in the end.   All these fluid relationships, sexual or platonic, is the heart of Black Sails. They are the beating pulse here and I think that since polyamory still is something very weird and threatening to a lot of people, the idea of a heart not fully beloning to ONE person, is the idea of a love that’s not true. Which couldn’t be more false. We are presented with two threepart relationships in the show, Flint/Miranda/Thomas and Jack/Anne/Max. None of them could be accused of being uncomplicated and they certainly not remind of each other. I’m certain that Silver, in his heart, loves Flint but isn’t aware of it, just as I think Flint could’ve loved Silver if he’d allowed himself. I think what Silver feels, is something utterly new to him and that the love he has for Madi is way easier for him to get a grip on, but in the end, Silver is ultimately alone. What he has with Madi isn’t bad, but it’s missing something. They both miss something and reckognizing that isn’t the same as saying madisilver isn’t for real. Of course it is, but silverflint is real too and so is thomasflint, mirandaflint and mirandathomas.  Black Sails’s relationships are basically all a bunch of shipwrecks, trying to make at least a part of themselves to safe shores. And none of those who make it to safe land, are whole and unscattered. Well, except from Idelle and Featherstone, of course. Those two are fucking unsinkable and should they ever end up in a storm, Idelle’s glorious tits will keep them both floating, and Featherstone’s tit curtain will be the sail to take them home.

i put a great deal of thought into this question as it is a very important question indeed, and have decided upon marie antoinette, as she liked ladies, and as i think i would fit very well into versailles. i’m well aware that one of marie antoinette’s rumoured lovers was murdered for her association with her, but that’s a risk i’m willing to take for the pretty dresses

yep. i’m not personally involved in it, but essentially there are a lot of claims of white feminism being thrown around in regards to her character. basically how it seems to me is that a lot of people really hate laura moon as she is a white woman (who does some pretty terrible things tbh) and who is given agency and character development which a lot of people claim is at the expense of characters of color like bilquis or even shadow. i guess my stance on this is that a) if you watch the finale, it’s pretty clear that bilquis is going to have a much bigger role in season 2 and b) it’s also clear that laura is not written to be entirely sympathetic and frankly neither is bilquis. i think there were definitely some problematic aspects to the portrayal of bilquis this season, and i’m interested to see how they develop her character next season, but i also think there’s some validity to the claim that laura moon is the “heart” of the show even if she’s kind of a shitty person. people are multifaceted, and shitty people can be tragic heroes. it happens all the time in fiction. 

also i think it’s slightly ridiculous to equate laura and bilquis in any way as they’re wildly different and occupy very different positions in the narrative. like as shitty as laura is, she’s human and bilquis is a goddess. i feel like a central theme of this show is that gods and humans have entirely alien moral paradigms, and thus i think it’s difficult to call any god in this show “morally sympathetic” as their primary concern will always be to ensure that they continue to be worshipped by any means necessary and many times explicitly (particularly in bilquis’s case) at the expense of human life (or existence bc tbh who tf knows what happens when she swallows someone up). basically, i think it’s a stretch (and kind of ridiculous) to try to equate or compare laura and bilquis in any way or to claim that bilquis deserves more of laura’s screentime because laura is a terrible person. they’re two different characters on two different paths which require different things from the narrative.

also, on the shadow front, again, this show is going to have multiple seasons so there will probably be more of him next season. he is still the protagonist after all, and people know that, but the thing about shadow is that he’s basically an audience stand-in (and this goes for shadow in the book as well) and audience stand-ins are, by their very nature, never the most interesting characters. i read an interview with ricky whittle where he said that he intentionally played shadow as not having much of a personality this season as he’s traumatized from his time in prison, the death (and un-death) of his wife, and all the weird shit that keeps happening to him, and that in upcoming seasons, he’s going to develop more of a personality now that he “believes”. i think that goes to show that he will definitely be more developed as time goes on.
