Okay so I’m listening to a Black Sails podcast called Fathoms Deep, and so far it’s pretty good and interesting.
BUT…the host absolutely do NOT understand sex work and queerness. In the first few episodes, their analyses of Eleanor and Max is just…really gross? Or grossly misunderstands a lot of the dynamics of their relationship as it pertains to Max being a sexworker.
Like they said that “it’s obvious Eleanor doesn’t truly love max because she’s just paying for the privilege to have her to herself.” No…she’s paying extra, and it’s stated to retain this privilege, but it’s so Max doesn’t have to do certain sex acts with men because she’s a lesbian, and Eleanor knows this presumably because they have a deeper understanding relationship.
Eleanor does keep Max at a distance, but that’s shown throw other things. The fact that max is a sex worker, and Eleanor pays for her, doesn’t inherently mean that Eleanor is doing so because she’s doesn’t truly love max.
It just feels very second wave feministy. The kind that is anti sex work, expects women to be girl bosses, and to hold themselves to “certain standards” because the men don’t.
And I just don’t think the hosts understand this important nuance. They think if Eleanor truly cared about Max, she would buy max out from noonan (something she may not even be able to do), and bring her into her home. They don’t understand that 1) Eleanor is still fairly young, 2) her money is her dads money and he may not allow her to buy out a courtesan, especially if he’s weird about her being with a woman, and 3) max may not even want that.
Women can be just as sexual, vulgar, crude, and yes, enjoy doing sex work. Max is really good at being a courtesan! She may want to stay in the profession, just without having to fuck men.
I stg if they keep being weird about lesbian dynamics and sex work, I’m going to rage quit the podcast (which would be smart to do lmao)
fathoms deep makes me SO happy and also so sad
it's such an incredible podcast made with so much love. and it's very, very obvious that it was kind of made before podcasts popped off as a marketing tactic by studios. for better and worse – on one hand, you have podcasts/behind the scenes that are branded and "better quality" and already engaged with the talent... but otoh there is 1000% less genuine content now.
and it's kind of incredible to see that one of the podcasters is now writing for tv and she kind of broke into the industry. I'm assuming it's actually from some of the connections fathoms deep brought her.
otoh oh hand it's probably because there are a lot of shows that are a lot less special than black sails clearly was
anyway
fathoms deep great
I'm so glad I stumbled onto it. it's really enhanced my love for the show
i am so grateful for the Fathoms Deep podcast bc i truly do need a 1.5 hour in depth debrief after each black sails episode. like this show makes me feel like i'm getting low voltage electrocuted for the entire episode duration and by the end of it i'm mentally cork board red stringing at least three different greek myths together with the old testament christian god and flint/silver yaoi
Look, what I found at the thrift store today!
i’m finishing episode 9 of fathoms deep and literally had to pause because their reading of max is just so fucking wrong!!!! they say they love her but they don’t seem to understand her at all
they’re claiming she’s different from silver because silver only cares about himself and max cares about others because she cared about eleanor. like we didn’t just see her snitching on the other whores to jack because it would benefit her. in later seasons she’s the one mining the chances of the revolution happening. the former whore who happens to be a black woman.
it’s about how she understands power and uses it to her advantage which is why she survives but it’s not honorable, is she the most intelligent person in the whole show? yes but she is questionable and that’s why she’s an interesting character and if you can’t see her for what she is then you can’t really love her
