John Lennon's sister takes a swipe at Paul Mescal casting

The Normal People star has landed the role of Sir Paul McCartney in a series of films, which will be directed by Sam Mendes.

While attending the Live Odyssey VIP Launch at The Stables Market in Camden, Julia, 78, told MailOnline there are plenty of actors 'waiting for a chance,' to land their big break, noting that Paul has been 'in everything.'

Since rising to fame in Normal People in 2020, Paul has landed a string of high-profile, including the 2024 blockbuser sequel Gladiator II.

Asked for her thoughts on the casting of Barry Keoghan and Paul Mescal, Julia said: 'Well he’s in everything! What’s wrong with Liverpool? We have actors, and they speak the language.'

The retired teacher also shared her thoughts on the casting of Harris Dickson as her late brother, who was assissinated in 1980.

She said 'I don’t think anything other than, have they been investigated and looked at Liverpool actors? Paul Mescal is in everything – get real, come on.

'There are more actors out there waiting for a go, and for a chance. It will be interesting to see what kind of accent he comes up with, because nobody can do a Liverpool accent. They all get it wrong.

'Well we [Liverpool] have got acting schools. You all know about the Playhouse in Liverpool, and every single big actor from years ago went through it, so why wouldn’t you think, let’s at least go and have a look?'

Julia added that she may head to the cinema to watch the first biopic when its released in 2028, 'if she is still around.'

European Actors in Make-up Portraying Other Races

In today’s Hollywood, there are a large number of great actors and actresses of every ethnic background to choose from when casting. The problem is that casting crews, directors, and producers continue to pick white actors over actors of other ethnicities, even when it is inappropriate for the film. This was even more of a problem in old Hollywood. Lead roles were written for and given to almost exclusively white actors and any minority groups were relegated to support roles at best. In fact, in the attempt to get as much Hollywood star power in a film, roles that were written specifically as a certain ethnicity were given to white actors and the results are ridiculous. I want to go over some examples of Hollywood so bent on “whitewashing” a role that nobody stopped to consider how ridiculous the actors looked and how insulting it was to audiences and especially to minority actors who should have gotten those parts:

Jade Tan in Dragon Seed (1944) played by Katherine Hepburn: Hepburn portrays a Japanese woman named Jade who stands up to the Imperialist Army during WWII. Casting white actors to portray characters of different backgrounds wasn’t abnormal at the time of this film’s release, but trying to make Hepburn look Japanese was just so forced. The film was nominated for best cinematography and I think it was due to the location work and the Herculean  attempt to make the lead actress not look like an alien. 

Ghengis Khan in The Conqueror (1956) played by John Wayne: The Conqueror is often ranked as one of the worst films of all time. The tagline for the film is a quote: “I am Temujin Barbarian… I fight! I love! I conquer… like a Barbarian!” John Wayne is a great American actor that successfully portrays...well...John Wayne. Now I think about it, the actor is a character and audiences wanted to see that character in different situations. Nobody wanted to see John Wayne act like anyone but John Wayne. So why didn’t casting look for a Mongolian actor? Or less insulting than Wayne would have been a Chinese actor. Hell, any actor of East Asian decent would have been better than trying to shoehorn John Wayne into that role. This was a stupid cash grab to try and pull an audience with John Wayne’s reputation and an insult to any Asian actors that were never even considered for the role. 

Mr. Yunioshi in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) played by Mickey Rooney: I am torn about this one because I am glad that no Japanese actor lowered themselves to play this uncomfortably offensive character. So many people love this film and I tend to agree until this character shows up and I suddenly remember why I don’t talk much about this movie. I almost wonder why this character wasn’t whitewashed by writers to be a grumpy old white guy. Today’s Hollywood writers just change the race of characters at will to fit the actor (which is incredibly insulting) but at times I am glad that they do that instead of casting white actors to portray minority characters through aggressively racist stereotypes. This is just painful to watch. 

Maria in West Side Story (1961) played by Natalie Wood: I love this movie. I love this story. I know all the songs and hum them in the car. Why the producers cast Natalie Wood as Maria is beyond me. She can’t sing (the singing voice was professional Marni Nixon), she is far and away the worst dancer in the big numbers, and her acting was not that great. Most insulting was that there was a Puerto Rican actress who could dance and sing that didn’t have to cake on brown face make up in the movie (Rita Moreno) who took home the award for best supporting actress. Why was she not the lead? Also, the Puerta Rican gang was led by a Greek actor and second in charge was a Filipino actor. Figure out that one.  

Othello in Othello (1965) played by Laurence Olivier: This one is worth mentioning because Mr. Olivier was a great Othello. He is a great Shakespearean actor and was the only actor on this list that was nominated for any kind of awards for their role. It is still really weird to see the incredibly pale English actor in dark black face make-up and wig in a leading role. It is also weird that another great dramatic actor that was also nominated for his acting roles that year was never considered for the role of Othello...Sidney Poitier.

Beatles biopic cast confirmed as stars assemble for first time

The cast for Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopics have been announced, with four huge names set to take on the roles of the Fab Four.

‘The movies are being made by Sony Pictures and Sam's Neal Street Productions company.

Mendes explained that he pitched the idea of making four films about the 'Hey Jude' group last year and wowed Sony executives Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler with his plans.

The Skyfall filmmaker told Deadline earlier this year: 'We went out to Los Angeles just before Christmas to pitch the project, and it's fair to say we were met with universal enthusiasm.'

'The reason Sony stood out from competing offers was down to Tom and Elizabeth's passion for the idea, and commitment to propelling these films theatrically in an innovative and exciting way.'

I tend to find better representation of black girls/ women in books/ webcomics than I do on n the big screen. Especially for dark skin. That’s why I prefer some books don’t get a film or tv adaptation out of fear of getting a light skin or biracial girl cast. ( still side eyeing the casting of the children of the blood and bones movie. One of the reason that book got popular is because it call out colorism only to do a colorist casting)

Don’t get me started on the children of blood and bones. And yes, I do get your point. Can i suggest you read babel by r.f kuang, there’s a darkskinned female ore character and i understood her so well.
