Hi, We're The Replacements!
I love making characters jerks 💚
Memo to Human Resources and When It Rains It Snows should get married
I'm going to make a bracelet for Miscellaneous T and I want it to be the greyest brownest one I own to truly recreate the water damage in Flansburgh's hallway
You have probably heard track number thirteen on They Might Be Giants' Miscellaneous T known as "Untitled", a Dial-A-Song recording that features a woman named Gloria talking about what she had heard on the early-days phone machine, but maybe you are unaware that several additional clips from the recording were revealed on the TMBG podcast.
As a refresher, here's the Gigantic (A Tale Of Two Johns) segment all about the infamous answering machine message.
"No, this ain't nothing dirty.. but it's annoying, right?"
Going all the way back to 2006, this clip that They called "Untitled Remix" has Gloria further expounding on DAS, set to some instrumental music which sounds suspiciously similar to a song by The Last Car about Mr. T. that appeared on the podcast earlier that year.
"Dear madam, could you please be more careful about the water."
A 2011 edition of the TMBG podcast opens with a short clip of our old friend Gloria discussing how to deal with noisy neighbors. 🎶🚿
do you have anything to say about I’ll Sink Manhattan
"Burn your forget-me-nots
Admit that true love can die
No, I won't apologize, my love,
Just kiss me goodbye."
The emotion in this song is intense, gives me chills. Another example of Flans' amazing vocals, they're so raw and powerful here. The softer segments followed by his booming singing voice.. I think the lacking instrumental does a lot here to let the vocals really stand out. I'd love to hear it live someday, since it seems it's in their current rotation.
I think the instruments used too really help convey the emotions, the reversed symbols, the synthesized chorus singing and drums kicking in.. it all adds to the drama.
The phone call at the beginning tying into the fact it's a recorded message, his love didn't answer.
The imagery here.. the symbolism of him telling his love to burn their forget-me-nots, telling them to forget about him, their love, that it's over. It's all over literally as well, especially for his love, since he's sinking the entirety of Manhattan, killing who knows how many people just to get back at them.
I also love the imagery of fire, contrasted with the water- not just from the flood, but his lover's tears
I don't have a lot to say about the reversed clip at the beginning, except that I think it's a bit funny.
Got my living room computer, which is hooked up to my stereo, set up to be remotely controlled with my phone now, so that's cool.
I think it only works on the local network although I don't really need to be playing music when i'm not here anyway. But it's cool that I don't have to be in my bedroom to change tracks. I remotely access my computer in the living room from my bedroom computer because I don't have a working monitor for that room.
And happy Factory Showroom / Miscellaneous T day.
