Rarepair Poll Ficlet: A Place For You (Mimi/Sora)

Summary: Quite some time has passed since Sora has left her life as Chosen Child behind to find her own path. Some pain- and tearful realizations later, she takes the first step to return - but is afraid of facing rejection. So it's Mimi's turn to show the wounded bird how to take flight again.

Complementary Fic: Rarepair Poll Ficlet: Second Guess (Koushirou/Takeru)

(A/N: This can be read as both platonic and romantic.)

“Black gears all over File Island, huh? Doesn’t that sound familiar?”, Mimi mused while reading the wall of text Koushirou had dropped into the group chat. Sighing lightly, she twisted a strain of her long, wavy air – now freshly dyed in bright pink, something she hadn’t done in quite a while.

Years to be exact.

Sora couldn’t take her eyes off that nostalgic sight as she tried to listen to her words. They were still sitting inside the Takenouchi residence and had already been on their way to head out for dinner, but the group chat was getting in the way.

“’We haven’t found the exact root cause yet and I’m aware that it’s inconvenient, but I would like to collect a digital sample before terminating the threat, so if anyone is currently free to travel to the Digital World to take on the task, that’d be greatly appreciated’. What a polite way to drop off the baggage, isn’t he a charmer?”, Mimi chuckled and Palmon joined in immediately. “But I guess we’re just the ones to do the job.”

Sora didn’t laugh.

“… Do you think it’s a good idea?”, she asked, fidgeting with the hem of her pink shirt, catching the attention of Mimi, Palmon – and Piyomon, who looked up to her with worried eyes.

“Sora…”

This was an entirely new situation. Not only had Mimi jumped through a gate from the US to Japan to visit her – now that the Digivices worked properly again and allowed for traveling through digital devices connected to the internet, this had become a much easier task. Koushirou, Ken and Miyako really had put their heads together to figure out a solution here…

But no. This was also the first time Sora would officially rejoin with the entire group after she had left the group chat. Quite a while ago.

Weeks, months of flower arrangement had passed. Various discussions with both her parents had taken place. Endless nights, tearful and lonely – and yet, Sora had intended to stick with her decision. Figuring out who she was by herself, detached from everyone and everything that may have connected her to the past. Her identity as a Chosen Child. No messages, no calls.

Just herself, a blank slate, a canvas to draw onto. But no matter how many flowers she tried to paint onto pristine white, the pieces didn’t seem to fit together for her.

One day, a long-forgotten book on colour coordination inside one of her shelves, squeezed in between various thick books about flower arrangement, had made its way into Sora’s vision. It wasn’t exactly sticking out at first glance – but it was definitely unique once you took a closer look:

There were purple sticky notes on various pages, specifying various colour combinations that had been famous in fashion design through the ages. On the last page, there was a list of colour-related song titles, written with a blue pen. Below that was another list of reference books about fabrics, written in yellow. There was also a pink folder of photos depicting typical floral designs used on different pieces of clothing. A bookmark in the middle of the book helped to keep track of where she had stopped reading last – it was stable, not easy to rip apart and little seals were printed on top of it. On the bottom of the bookmark, a little keychain with a cactus was applied. Last but not least, a small dedication text had been written in orange letters on the very first page:

“I hope this will be of use to you, wherever you will go. There will always be a place for you, no matter what happens.”

More talks with her parents had followed. More tears had been shed. Waves of internalized conformity had come crashing down, surges of anger and disappointment with herself. Until she couldn’t bear it anymore.

Until she simply had to send Mimi a message.

‘I don’t think I’m good at flying alone.’

“Sora-san…”, Mimi said now, looking at Sora’s insecure frame while giving her the softest smile. Without hesitating, she went over to her. Just like she had done after receiving the message – not physically, as they had still been countries apart at that time, but she had replied immediately.

Takenouchi Sora was one of the most resourceful, competent people she had ever known. Without Sora, Mimi knew she would not have made it out of the Digital World at age 10, surrounded by boys, uncomfortable and overwhelmed. In her book, Sora was strong beyond her own realizations, graceful, beautiful – and seeing her so vulnerable now made Mimi think that it was the perfect time to pay it all back.

“I told you, we’ll always have your back, right…?”, Mimi kept smiling, her heart bursting with affection and the wish to reassure her. Peeling herself out of the pink hoodie she wore, she wrapped it around Sora’s shoulders – as if to put the baby bird back into its nest. In return, Sora just blinked at her in confusion.

“Well, you did… But…”

“You’re here now and that’s what counts. With a new style…”, Mimi’s smile widened into a grin as she tapped Sora’s blue cap, letting her fingers slip down until she reached the necklace with the blue gemstone. Blue just like Piyomon’s eyes – and the sky this bird was supposed to be flying across. “Or rather, it’s a newly defined style and you did that all by yourself, you know? It suits you, heh. Right, Piyomon?”

The pink bird replied with a cheerful “Yes!” – and to Sora, it still felt like a surreal dream to have her back around. Once she had sent the message to Mimi, once she had taken out the book from the shelf, once she had ripped out half her closet to pick out blue jeans, a striped shirt and sneakers, as well as the aforementioned cap… Her own sense of what it meant to be Takenouchi Sora – woman, daughter, Chosen Child. Friend.

“You’re loved!”, Mimi exclaimed with absolute confidence and her trademark sincerity, still twisting the necklace around before both her hands reached for Sora’s cheeks for emphasis, squishing them gently. “Always have been, always will be! And if anyone dares to judge you, I’m gonna kick them!”

“Mimi-chan…”

Little tears glistened in Sora’s eyes – but this time, she smiled as well. Mimi had been the one she had chosen to get in touch with, had been the first to learn how much she had fought with herself, her choices, her inner demons. It may have taken her a while. It may have looked like the right path – which it had been for some time. But now – she realized that taking the hand Mimi had always offered her was the right next step.

It hadn’t even taken a day until Koushirou had re-sent her an invitation to the group chat. Not even a week until every single of their friends had texted her – one way or another.

“You’re so cheesy…”, Sora laughed eventually, wiping the tears away and leaned in a little closer, foreheads almost touching.

“You’re only saying that because you haven’t seen me kicking Taichi-san’s and Yamato-san’s butts yet…”

That’s how she knew this was her place.

i was rereading the soulmark / oisin au and i was thinking about 0124ji! gaining soul marks. like Sanji has the mutations, its just buried within him. it was triggered and awakened when he used the raid suit.

in the same sense, their humanity is buried within them. what better trigger than a soulmate? So say like its when the Seraphim are attacking Amazon Lily, and Kuma and Sabo and Koala arrives at Karai Bari informing Crocodile and Mihawk of their clones.

Sabo and Ichiji accidentally brush against each other and in the next moment; Sabo marks start filling in but the shock of it all is that Ichiji is gaining a mark. Its the same place his Germa tattoo would have been. Mihawk, Sora, and the siblings are just jaw droppingly shock as it appears on his skin and fill itself in. Mihawk just catches Yonji as he faints in shock.

Reiju and Mihawk go to see what’s happening in Amazon Lily. Mihawk because its his clone and Reiju because only females are allowed there. They meet Boa (or come across Perona again) and like the same thing happens. She brushes against them or shakes their hand, and now her thighs have a soulmark. Actually lets make it Boa; knock her out of her obsession with Luffy and just fluster her.

and it keeps happening to Niji and Yonji (i cant think of anyone for them right now) … their hair color is also supposed to be a symbol of a successful mutation so it lightens. Like it doesn’t go away completely (because Sanji’s hair didnt darken after awakening his) but it looks more pastel in color.

Sora is crying enough to flood a river. Like its still F Judge but now his stupid experiment have given her the perfect children. They have their humanity and are hard to kill. Its really all she ever wanted. If anyone tried to touch them, she’d brain them herself.

i’m getting ahead of myself. But yeah, the hair thing and them gaining soulmates and thus triggering their humanity was the main point of this

Amazing, love it, Love how thought out this is, and idk about Yonji but I do ship Niji and Uta, I can't remember who created the ship, but I do remember the joke being The Pepsi Ship which is peak funny humor imo. Sorry about the wait on this.

Like Mihawk and his soulmate and 4/5 of the kids being on Karai Bari suddenly being informed of the seraphim by an old colleague of the men's being informed of clones, mixed with Lunarian dna - possibly like the kids - and they're wreaking havoc on Amazon Lily has to be annoying. Of course after the talk Sabo is gesturing while talking with Koala as they walk around and his hand accidentally grazes Ichiji who is walking the other way with Reiju only for them both to stop.

Sabo is cheering he found his soulmate and Ichiji is scrambling to check himself for a mark and finds one on his arm. Ichiji stares in shock, Reiju is bolting to their parents and siblings, screaming something unholy in Northern making eyes follow her.

"With a reaction like that you'd think you didn't have one." Sabo laughs.

"I, I didn't? Until now, this mark is brand new, it wasn't there this morning." Ichiji stutters out in confusion which makes Sabo and Koala confused. They watch a set of colorful heads race back to them, despite Mihawk's calling of them to calm down and them not listening even as the woman holding Mihawk's hand seems to be held back by him holding her. Ichiji doesn't seem happy about his siblings but Sabo is sticking close, having just found his soulmate he's not about to let them get hurt.

Except they're all speaking in a heavily accented Northern dialect that Sabo can't follow along in until Ichiji shows his soul mark to what Sabo and Koala approximate as his family and Koala might be preparing Sabo's funeral rites because of Mihawk being there with them. But none the less the newcomers and Reiju are looking in disbelief at the mark.

The green haired one is about to collapse only to be caught by the former warlord as the older woman is cheering. "Fuck you, Vinsmoke! My kids are human! I fucking win!"

"Oh you weren't lying." Sabo says in shock.

"No, our brother Sanji, he's on the Strawhat crew, he was the only one born with one." Ichiji explains. "Sorry about them. They're not usually like this." He continues as his family is having revelations.

"Oh, Luffy's my little brother, that's so cool!" Sabo smiles widely.

"Of course he is, nothing in our life is ever simple." Mihawk sighs as the blue one starts laughing.

After introductions are properly made and Mihawk explains in the barest of terms about kidnapping his soulmate from an evil scientist dictator who used the kids as test subjects, do Sabo and Koala understand why they had those reactions.

They spend the days before going to Amazon Lily getting know each other and enjoying the company. Ichiji enjoying having a soulmate like Sanji. They talk about Sabo's dream of writing of his travels and such and Ichiji doesn't know about what he wants yet, doesn't know his dream, but he doesn't mind.

Ichiji does pull Sabo into a kiss before they leave with his dad and sister for Amazon Lily and Sabo blinks and pulls him into a deeper one. Reiju lets out a wolf whistle as his brothers cheer. Mihawk and Sora just look fond, reminiscing of their youth. Then their off to Amazon Lily.

Mihawk and Sabo are waiting after getting everything under control for the girls. Mihawk doesn't give him a shovel talk, instead tells him some stories about Ichiji growing up with his brother's and his relief his children are more human than he originally thought. Then Reiju is running to the shore with a hand holding Boa Hancock tight, dragging the warlord behind her. Mihawk and Sabo are instantly concerned something dreadful happened but that's not what's happening.

"I have a soulmate!" His daughter cries happily at him. Mihawk's shock is obvious as he looks at his colleague and Sabo is laughing as Koala is running up to them as well, pissed off they left her. Hancock and Mihawk look at each other, their faces reflecting the same feelings they have.

"I should probably call your mother." Mihawk says after a moment to his eldest child.

"Two in a week has got to be a record." Koala pans.

"Oh thank gods you have a woman in your life." Hancock says with relief.

"My wife is a better person than I." Mihawk agrees with a daze to go call his soulmate. Who once again cheers about her victory over Judge. Mihawk is just thankful the poison didn't take his soulmate from him. Reiju stays on Amazon Lily for the time, to get to know her soulmate and have some good socialization which her parents agree with and Mihawk leaves with a kiss to his daughters head and a warning look to Hancock after everything he saw at Marineford. Hancock understands it with a nod.

At some point, perhaps after Wano, Shanks pulls up with his crew and daughter that the Dracule family never really had a chance to meet for one reason or another. Ichiji is off with Sabo and the Revolutionaries and Reiju is still on Amazon Lily so it's just the two kids at Karai Bari with their parents. Shanks is happy to get to see his friend and his kids again and is excited to finally introduce his daughter to them. (Idk maybe Shanks left her on Elegia but kept contact and then went and got her.)

Sora is cooing over the Red Hair's only fruit user and chastising Shanks about not bringing her around when the kids were growing up but Shanks wanted her safe, and they only had a ship, not an island with a man who could cut the ocean to protect it. Sora does relent at that. When Niji and Uta shake hands though, both of them freezing as they realize Uta's mark is filling and Niji's is forming.

"Well, I guess that means you're stuck with me." Shanks laughs to Mihawk who is reeling at all of his kids but Yonji have a soulmate and have met them. Sora insists on them staying a few days so the kids can get to know each other and Beck is praying because of who Shanks and Mihawk are just as pirates and then adding in everything else going on.

Sora is very happy she's winning over Judge even if it means Yonji is now gearing to go sail to find his own soulmate if he has one.
