I'm months behind in answering this ask, but here we go. Thank you so much for sending it to me. <3 This is going to be a long post, so bare with me. I'll put most of it under a cut and of course will tag it for blacklists. :)
The Empty Nest Verse is one of my favorites that I re-read at least once a year. It started out as a short fic, and like many short fics, turned into A Thing. First, I wanted to write about found families (Burt and Carole finding a homeless teenager, Kurt, sleeping under their front porch.)
Secondly, I wanted to write a completely different take on the hybrid trope. I have a truly life long love of science fiction and have been writing original sci-fi and sci-fi in other fandoms for nearly as long with a heavy alien perspective in my works. I wanted to show hybrids as a completely separate race with their own full agency, dually evolved on Earth. I even rewrote Empty Nest (now Empty Nest-Revised) and Rebuilding the Nest because I didn't feel I'd made that clear with the first writing passes. I'm still not sure if it's clear enough, tbh. People hear "hybrid" and run away. Which, hey, that's fine. To each their own tropes and nopes. I'm just very...me...about wanting to communicate well and get frustrated when I don't.
Anyway...the 2016 election happened and as a parent of a gay POC son, spouse (who's also a POC) and I worked our asses off to get said (young adult) son to a safer country. In order to cope with the very real fears for our family, some of the traumas that had happened to our son, and express them and what was happening to others who had it far far far worse, the verse then became a political allegory.
I wrote Kurt's childhood spent in juvie in the first of two prequels, A Nest of Scars. It was followed by A Nest in Flight. Every single time I thought I'd gone too far, up would pop a news story or I'd read about another atrocity and know that I actually hadn't gone far enough in some cases. And this was before the horrors of the adminstration the second time around.
So I'm really proud of this verse even though I wish I'd cut out at least half of the medical stuff in Rebuilding the Nest and some other redundancies in it.
I do love my re-writing of Empty Nest and Rebuilding the Nest from Burt's perspective though, which is aptly named, Burt's Nest. I got out more of my parenting feels with that one. I love writing Burt Hummel and Carole and Burt Hummel with Kurt.

The second verse I'm proud of is my Everybody's Naked & There's a Country To Run. I wanted to write something fun. Something that was the opposite of the Empty Nest verse. In Empty Nest, being naked for Kurt is traumatic. In Everybody's Naked, it's just funny...with some angsty and feels moments because I can never get away from those.
But it started out with knowing I wanted to do a take on the "a royal couple has to get married naked in front of everybody to prove important things and it's a bit traumatic for them" trope. In my brain, I had a very clear Kurt moment where he's practicing a dance with others and the AC is so high that when he has to bend over his butt crack feels like it's being pelted by ice cubes. He exasperatedly exclaims, “Why do we have to be naked for this?”
And thus a whole verse about ruling royal families having to be naked during important political meetings and events like marriages was born.
The first fic starts out clumsy. I fully admit that along with a bunch of plot holes - some that I try to explain away elsewhere and some that I honestly just ignore. In the middle of writing that fic I started world building. Like major world building. I have a Hummel castle tour I'm really proud of at the end of Everybody's Naked & There's a Country To Run. I wrote a whole history about the chain chicken restaurant that Admiral Beiste loves and did the fan art for it, called, Castle Chicken. I have an unfished Maps & Countries "fic" where I give histories and maps of most of the real United States as is divided up in the verse. There's far more written and figured out than what's published.
I'm proud of The Queens Passageway that is a finished stand alone fic that takes the reader through the history of the royal Hummels in the one space they feel they can truly be themselves.
I'm still, slowly, writing the prequel to Everybody's Naked called, Growing Up is a Royal Thing To Do.
And I'm writing a stand alone fic called Bodyguards which is from Burt's perspective about dating and then marrying into the royal Hummel family and having to get used to being naked and having bodyguards all around him. It was inspired by watching the security details of Tim Waltz and Kamala Harris during the presidential campaign. Waltz gives off such Burt Hummel vibes and I was absolutely fascinated by the way their security details interacted with him and Harris in just the few public moments we the public got to see.
Best of all though for this verse, I made my own stick figure fanart in Paint, it cracks me up, and I'm damn proud of it.

Carole is a cop, Burt and Kurt have tentacles trope, Cop Carole and Her Tentacled Stepson. My spouse was squicked out by this fic, not understanding at all why Carole would love that Burt could touch her in all the places at once, and I didn't feel like explaining it to him. The Kurt parts got too angsty and some of the writing is really sloppy, but like I said, I loved Carole and Burt together. I think the ending is funny. And I loved Carole as a cop so much that I wrote her as a badass military officer in my Everybody's Naked verse.

(My attempt at a Celtic-ish fairy tale (heavy on the -ish); vaguely influenced by Katharine Kerr’s Deverry Cycle. 500 words each part is the goal. Title from the Broadcast song “Winter Now”.)

Oh, this story is SO beautiful… it catched me from start to finish. Sweet angst, brilliantly written plot and characterisation, and such a vivid way to picture one of the most fascinating historical fantasy worlds I’ve ever read. And an ending that feels so intimate. ♥
My normal answer to this question is Glee. (but you know that, I think.) It’s the first fandom I posted fic or meta in with my name attached. (And for all of tumblr’s shortcomings, this was in large part because tumblr lowered the entry barrier, too.)
But the *first* fandom I got involved in, for real? No names, was Merlin back in 2008-09, on the second anon meme that fandom had. (I was SO SAD when that meme’s atmosphere changed, then it died; I never went on to the third ‘mean’ meme.) I posted a few tiny fics there, even, and I stayed up till late at night, arguing about I can’t even remember what, for the most part. … but it was also a pale shadow of everything I do in fandom now, cause I still had my old livejournal that I shared with all my college friends, and for god knows what fucking reason, I didn’t just make a second one for fandom, so, I tried to keep everything I did there ~secret.
And the first fandom I wrote fic for that I shared with only my sister, and ship warred with my best friend over in middle school at lunch, if *that* counts as involved ;), with no strangers or internet, was Tortall.
13. Any NoTPs?
Still anything involving Sebastian, I guess ;). (… I feel like the tables turned SO MUCH, having fallen for the ‘divisive and lots of fandom has his name bl'ed for good reasons’ one-could-argue-abusive character in my latest canon, @me, why.)
And incest in general, by default - I will ship some sibling incest ships in specific circumstances - basically, either the 'we never knew we were and/or didn’t grow up as siblings’ that for most people is typified by Luke/Leia but for me is many takes on Arthur/Morgan, or the 'we’re both fucked up to hell and it’s us against the world’ of e.g. Simon/River - but, so, most sibling pairs I don’t want to see as fucked up enough for the incest to make sense to me. so e.g. Schuylercest would’ve been a NoTP in Hamilton, if there was ever much of it around anyway.
I’m thinking and I really really don’t have any NoTP’s in Check, Please! fandom. Tons of pairings I generally don’t care much about - but will check out if I like the author or rec enough - and, I mean, I mostly don’t buy breaking zimbits up. So endgame Jack or Bitty with someone else (and not in a poly scenario)… I’ll give it a chance? But I’m not sure anyone’s convinced me yet.
36. What’s your favourite genre to write?
Am I actually capable of writing more than genre, um. The 'very little actually happens but people have lots of feelings and furthermore probably nothing is resolved genre,’ aka I guess once in a while I might? manage to write something else.
(also, NOT PORN, omg, I’m always finding myself writing porn and just feeling like I’m … bad… at the porn aspect, but I can’t always just skip over it for Characterization Reasons; likewise NOT HUMOR, I can’t make a joke for the life of me; and definitely NOT FLUFF lol… maybe angst? by default? but usually kinda ambiguous and lowkey angst. If that is a genre.)
44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?
ALL OF THE SHIPS I WANT TO READ…. lol, I am kidding. But I don’t know! I feel like all my favorite ships - parse/oc, (particularly parswoops <3), parse/jack/bitty, angsty past jack/parse - are getting pretty good amounts of attention, for being, I think, medium-sized ships in a medium-sized fandom. Part of me wants to say specifically Kent/Andy and Kent/Maida/Luis but…. being as those are @des-zimbits’ OCs and not actual characters, that is NOT ACTUALLY AN ANSWER MULTS geez. It is my instinct, though. (And I don’t have a real answer.)
