Thousands participate in solidarity parade for transgender student who was bullied

Cars, horses and even planes passed by the Mission waterfront to show support

A parade of vehicles, horses and even a flyby performed by local pilots, converged on Mission’s waterfront today (Jan. 17) as a show of solidarity and support for a transgender student who was bullied and beaten by two fellow Grade 8 students from École Heritage Park Middle School last week.

Donning the symbolism of Pink Shirt Day (anti-bullying) the vehicles drove past the student who was watching the event with their family.

Participants waved signs, cheered and some even dropped off gifts as they offered support, while still following Covid-19 safety precautions.

Event organizer Clark Jahn – who also helped organize the recent 4×4 Christmas fleet parade – said the rally is a way to show that bullying is not acceptable in this day and age.

2 students arrested in assault of transgender girl at Mission middle school

Mother said daughter was targeted because of how she identifies

Two Mission students have been arrested following an alleged assault on a transgender girl at École Heritage Park Middle School on Monday, Jan. 11.

Charges have been sent to Crown Counsel for the two Grade 8 girls, who were arrested and released this morning, according to Cpl. Jason Raaflaub of the Mission RCMP. One girl has had one assault charge recommended, while one count of assault and one count of uttering threats has been recommended for the other.

The girl’s mother – who the Record is keeping anonymous to protect the family from any harassment – received a text message from her daughter shortly after the attack.

“She was just in tears,” the mother said. “She said, ‘I need you, I was beaten up.’”
