While I grew up in Ohio, it was just a known thing to the kids at school that I was both black and white, but it also didn’t really matter to them what I was. However, the fact that they knew and ACKNOWLEDGED my racial identity, made me feel normal. I have always been proud of my blackness, yet understand I do not have the same struggles as fully black folk. But, when I moved to Maryland, my racial identity was questioned by my peers. Not only questioned, but INVALIDATED. Living in Maryland and then in NYC everyone thought I was something I absolutely wasn’t. I evolved into this racially ambiguous being that made me feel unseen. I would constantly have racial identity crises, and still do sometimes. I’m biracial, and I’ve had many people tell me I’m not — which makes absolutely no sense. So I am blessed to have someone to look up to and relate to through music who is unapologetically biracial. Thank you Bobby Hall. My Experience

When I was 8 years old I moved towns, my new “home” was in a predominantly white area, having previously lived in a very multicultural area the reality was shocking. This was the first time i really noticed that there were far less multicultural people than i originally thought, in all fairness before I moved towns it hadn't really occurred to me that i was mixed race because i was so used to being surrounded by people of different races that i figured everywhere else was like my home town, filled with lots of different people who look different; however when i first walked into my new school and counted the handful of none white people in the room the reality hit me. Yes there were 2 black kids, 2 Asian kids and one other mixed race child but being in that room still made me feel like an outcast because it was only then that i realised being mixed race made me stand out and although there many be a few other kids of other ethnicities none of them were like me, none of them were from the exact same countries as me and for a few years this caused me to isolate myself from my new class mates in different ways. Its been 10 years since I first moved to a town i can truly call my home, I have learnt to understand myself better and further learn about the countries I’m from as well as meeting new people mixed and none mixed alike, each experience has helped me to become more confident in who i am as a person. I used to hate being mixed race because it made me feel alone and different but now I love who i am and i wouldn’t change that fact about me.

People Not Gasping/Saying “But you don’t LOOK Native American/like an Indian”/Saying “Yeah right. I’ve known you since Elementary; you’re white!” as if I somehow grew into being mixed race some time in the past 17 years?/Insinuating that I’m lying/Insinuating that one of my parents cheated on the other (Which wouldn’t matter anyway since my mom is 1/8th and my dad is 1/2)/Saying “I don’t care- you look white so you don’t have any racial problems, and you shouldn’t try to get a Native American scholarship/wear your bone choker/try to get in contact with a historical society for either one of your heritage tribes/have anything to do with Native culture or history ever!” 2017

Let this be the year that instead of trying to start shit with me and tell me “Well, you’re white-passing, so _____!”, they ask me about my family and are interested- OR BETTER YET, DON’T IMPLY THAT THE KNOWLEDGE THAT I AM NOT 100% IS A SHOCKING THING.
