Check yourself before you wreck yourself
First of all i found this beautiful statement from Mizznina’s Instagram. Every word and every sentence of her captions about this statement is so beautiful and meaningful.
“First time i heard this, was back in 1993 when i heard a catch hook from a hip hop track which said the same thing - u better check yourself before you wreck yourself (of course context was different) but the hook is so catchy i was reminded about this today by Iman Omar Suleiman, when he was talking about sabr.
Saba requires discipline.
The best definition of Sabr is to restrain the self - just as the hardship strikes and u want to say something displeasing to Allah, imagine there is a invisible hold on your tongue - and u say dhikir instead.
Just like when u have a desire for something - catch yourself, hold yourself.
The more powerful, wealthy and famous you get - generally - you are more easily agitated. Like u don't have anymore patience for your loved ones at home, bad service, or waiting in line, in traffic etc.
Sabr is all about saying to yourself - hold on, just stop, check yourself & remember who u are! know how to check yourself before you wreck yourself!
Before you say/type something you regret, before gossiping & backbiting before you buy something you don’t need, before you eat for 7 stomachs instead of 1, before you rush in your obedience to Allah (like no kusyuk in prayer, slow down!) before you lose yourself by losing patience with other people & before you lose out on the limitless reward for those who are patient & before u give up on going that extra mile/hour. Check, yo’self! 👊🏻
Say, “O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.” 39: 10
Allah will reward without limits. Most people will be in hannah not because of the good deeds they did but because their patience in hardship. They prepared themselves. Allah finds them patient and He grows the reward for their patience. Saba is limitless in its rewards.
There is no good in complaining all the time. Your friends will be depressed & enemies happy. Seek reward from Allah for being patient. Conceal your calamity & be pleased with Allah despite the circumstances.
