For Flashback Friday and because I haven’t posted it yet.... My Photos from the MIA(@artsmia ) exhibit “Sunken Cities”that I saw a couple weekends ago. The exhibition shows how Egypt mixed with Greece politically, religiously and aesthetically. Photo descriptions below: 1-“Stele of Thonis-Heracleion” — Intricate hieroglyphics include the pharaoh offering a plate of vases and loaves.This large work from 380 B.C. was carved in extremely hard stone and was the first proof that the cities of Thonis and Heracleion were the Greek and Egyptian names for the same city. 2-Serapis an Egyptian-Greek Hybrid god that existed shows the melding to civilizations. 3-Just as menus in Montreal are written in French and English, a small gold plaque dating from 221-204 BCE is written in Greek and hieroglyphs. 4-Canopic jar statue. 5-Sphinx statue. 6-4 various statues of gods and goddesses all made within ~500 years of each other in the two sunken cities you see the influence of Greek style influence Egyptian sculpture over that time. 7-In Ancient Egyptian religion, Taweret is the protective ancient Egyptian goddess of childbirth and fertility. 8-Neilos the Greek god of the Nile. #sunkencities #mnmia #imthatperson #historynerd #mnphotography #knowledgeispower #fbf (at Minneapolis Institute of Art) https://www.instagram.com/rochelle.els/p/Bv3OZbZllYy/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1g5pgq40plcm3
