Ever since I knew that War Games is the former story of Under the Red Hood, this intriguing possibility has been lingering in my mind.
War Games was Bruce's contingency plan: to take on the identity of Matches Malone and become the leader of Gotham's criminal underworld in order to control crime. Its opening almost same as Under the Red Hood — a gathering of various crime bosses for a meeting where none of the attendees know who the mastermind is. Stephanie set this plan in motion without permission, unaware that Matches Malone was actually Batman. Most importantly, Matches himself failed to show up on time. Without anyone to lead it, the meeting devolved into a bloodbath, which in turn sparked a city-wide gang war that nearly destroyed Gotham.
So I began to wonder, is there any fiction about the alternative universe? After Stephanie secretly sends out the meeting invitations to the crime bosses, Bruce receives the alert in time, shows up to the meeting as Matches Malone, and successfully takes control of Gotham's underworld. Sure, Bruce insists the War Games plan should never be put into action, but life is unpredictable! If he were to abandon the identity now, Gotham would descend into a horrific gang war. What Bruce doesn't know is that just a few months later, his dead son would return to Gotham with a crime-lord plan identical to War Games.
Jason: Alright, let's see which crime boss needs to be dealt with urgently. Jason: …Matches Malone? Jason: Seriously? My dear old man? What the hell is he doing? Jason: And when did he steal my plan???
