There were other laundresses, but you were the duke’s personal one, largely because of the bloodstains on his clothes and bedding. You asked no questions and passed no judgment. He’d never spoken to you directly, but he did send you small gifts and treasures, for your... discretion.

Early one evening, he decides to thank you in person.

It is evening. The soft patter of rain against the windows, the gentle, distant rumble of thunder, but you are wrapped in the warmth of a shared blanket. All the lights are off except for one, a dim lamp that casts soft, golden orange light over the top of hands that are close, but not quite touching. Your fingers twitch, though.

Their eyes are closed, but they are smiling, content, sitting beside you, leaning against you. Words build in your throat, but you can't seem to bring yourself to say them. Would they even want to hear?
