Hey, I'm new to Laika and I was wondering how likely it is that we'll get featurettes/behind the scenes footage of the actors recording their voices? 👀
Do voice actors for Laika movies tend to do press junkets as well like for other big movies or is it just a select few and then the makers?
Hope you have a great day!
Hello there! Thank you for reaching out to us!
Great question! The short answer is, fortunately, YES!
The long answer: it seems that this is primarily the case for the first three Laika films (Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls.), Or at the very least they are the most accessible, as I've barely found anything for the latter two.
These mainly come in the form of DVD extras and recordings of big events, such as ComicCon. Even if you don't have home media copies of these films, they're still easy to track down on Youtube with the right search terms!
Still, there are some that are tricky to find, but I can help you get started!
Some of these home media extras with voice acting B-Roll footage border on lost media, because they were implemented on old Blu-Ray Software that isn't even compatible with most Blu-Ray players anymore. As far as I know, these were only made for Coraline and ParaNorman. However, there was a will, and there was a way.
As much as I wish the release of behind-the-scenes material could be more formulaic across all films, the variety does add a certain thrill to tracking this stuff down. We're always happy to share our internet findings with the world!

Rumor has it: Wildwood will be over two hours in runtime with a PG-13 rating
We want to preface this post by stating that this is JUST A RUMOR. Nothing is confirmed by LAIKA yet!
The rumor began on the website for the Regal theater company, which listed the film's runtime as 2 hours and 19 minutes, or 139 minutes total. The page has since been taken down, but for reference, if these leaks are to be believed, that would make the film 1 minute shorter than Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the current record-holder for the longest American animated film, and about 22 minutes longer than Pinocchio, the current longest stop-motion film!
Ambitious, indeed.
Wildwood: pages to screen!

Herbert Trubshaw's Face
The majority of Herbert's on-screen appearances in The Boxtrolls have him in an extremely unkempt state, with a massive amount of equally unkempt hair; a specialty puppet referred to as "Prisoner Herbert". Fairly early in production the realization was made that this vast quantity of hair would make rapid prototype animation virtually impossible, thus a mechanical face was created for the puppet. Some production notes are shown in The Art of The Boxtrolls, revealing that this internal facial mechanism has 7 paddles in total just to manipulate Herbert's eyebrows.
