Week 5, Friday
What is your favorite thing about your subject/major/degree?
How applicable it is!!! Economics alone tbh can be disheartening, especially when professors don't really acknowledge the many, many loopholes and contradictions and dubious assumptions within economic theories. However, economics provides an interesting framework to begin to think about possible solutions and problems in other fields, using incentives and markets. I think everyone who can should audit at least one upper level economics course, just for the perspective. For example, I heard a really cool talk by Yoram Bauman (a stand up comedian who talks about economics, but he also works in environmental policy) and he was telling us about a really interesting carbon tax concept. Taxes disincentivize what's being taxed, so it makes sense that we should tax "bad" things, like carbon. A lot of discourse around the carbon tax is based on people not wanting even more extra taxes, which is fair, so one possible solution would be to tax all households and businesses on their carbon footprint, and reduce income taxes or property taxes by the same amount, to incentivise working more, or buying property, since these are usually "good" things.
Interesting policy ideas in lots of fields can come out of economics - I think it's a shame that often they're not very well known.

Week 3 - Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Thu - What is the song that makes you happy no matter what?
grand escape - radwimps
it’s such a clean, hopeful song, and it really evokes the feeling of flying across a blue sky. it’s the one morning alarm song I can listen to for months and not get negative associations with because it’s my morning alarm.
Fri - What is your favourite TV programme at the moment (on Netflix etc)?
I don’t really watch TV, but I might start The Millionaire Detective Balance: Unlimited, just because everyone I follow on my other blog is watching it.
Sat - Where is your favourite place in the world (eg a city you’ve been to, a restaurant, or a particular hiking spot)?
I don’t really have a singular favorite place. I’m fortunate enough to have traveled a fair bit, and while there’s lots of gorgeous scenery that pops up in memory, my absolute favorite places are those associated with people I love. It sounds cheesy, but when I visited my high school after graduation with my friends, we had to stop by the corner of the locker niche where we met and ended up eating lunch together every day, and that’s one of my favorite spots in the world because I spent so much time with some of my favorite people there.
Another place that comes to mind is the koi pond in my grandparents’ condo community, since I used to sit there and watch the fish (and escape my homework). There were also these really fragrant jasmine or gardenia trees around, and I liked to sit on the covered balcony, smell the flowers, and listen to the cicadas on rainy days.
Week 4 - Monday, Tuesday
Mon - What is your biggest tip for staying focused?
I’m so easily distracted; I need tips for staying focused... but I don’t have them. Oops. Oddly enough, though, my most focused days are the days I’m dressed nicely - sometimes, I’ll throw on my pink trench coat and a skater skirt, and the outfit puts me in the mood to be cool and productive. Dress for success!
Tue - What is your biggest tip for not getting cabin fever?
Open the windows. The first thing I do in the morning (unless it’s raining) is open the window in my room. The sounds from outside and the scent of fresh air remind me that there’s a world outside my house. I also go for runs in the morning, while avoiding other people and wearing a mask. I’m lucky enough to live in a fairly open area where I don’t run into people around even normally.
Week 5 - Saturday
What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play?
In terms of video games, I both play and watch YouTube matches of the mobile/PC game Identity V. It's similar to Dead By Daylight but without the horror aspects, and it's fun to play with friends, especially in these times.
In terms of sports, I practice acrobatics and ice skating casually at university, but I can't do either of those things now at home :/
Week 5, Sunday
What is your favorite childhood memory?
My grandfather took me to the petting zoo a couple times when I was a kid, and my favorite thing to do was just sit with the baby goats (other kids?) and feed them lettuce. There's something really comforting about chilling with a tiny goat when you are also tiny.
Week 6, Monday
Share a picture of your favorite animal
I didn't want to reblog hijack a post, but one of my favorite animals now is the seal, and I just reblogged a post of one of many reasons I love them! We love banana pose seals.
Studyblr 2020 Quarantine Challenge!
Week 1 Monday:
Have you made a study schedule to help you study at home?
I just started this new planner, and I’m trying to stay consistent in using it to track how I use my time every day, and set a few light goals every day. Today, I’m hoping to finish some readings and a presentation for my bioinformatics class. I’m not sure how a presentation’s going to work, but, we’ll see how this pans out.
Hope everyone stays safe and healthy (both physically and mentally) in the coming weeks!
