Mokuso (meditate and relax)
Long drills and a meditation question
For unknown reasons, last class Sensei went over like, three, four techniques and had us mostly doing them in groups of four. Ukemi phase: get thrown down, get up while watching next uke get thrown, run to end of line while next uke gets thrown, only now you're at the front of the line. Only for twenty minutes instead of five. Crap. I mean, umm, "great workout!" But the one paired exercise was, ducking straight down under a blow to the side of the head in such a way that your forearm ends up moving with the strike, and your other hand comes up into whathaveyou, ikkyo mostly. But I was a full head taller than my partner, so I had to start low (training etiquette) and go lower (technique shown). My legs burn. And I was given pointed direction that, at the start of class lineup, I was to assume the mokuso posture while waiting for Sensei. Previously, I had the understanding that we were to wait for Sensei to began meditation - we copy Sensei, not the other way around. How does your school allocate time for meditation?

Whoever fights Monsters
Should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster
Recently in my Karate and Judo classes we’ve doing a thing at the beginning of the class called Mokuso. This translates from Japanese to English as empty mind or empty your mind as a command. I’m so used to jiu jitsu and wrestling where formal tradition was never big for us. So all the rigidness of class can be a bit much sometimes but this aspect is one of my favourites. An actual formal and accepted excuse to sit with myself without judgement from others as being that weird quiet kid. A chance to simply just be without stressing about the past or future. To literally just be in this moment completely. It gets me excited for the training ahead because all the baggage that I was bringing in with me suddenly dissolves. And at the end of class doing it again helps me clear any of my pride or ego that may have tagged along during class. As well as it clears me back into society and leaves me feeling fully refreshed from the martial art. Reaping the body and soul benefits of martial arts and letting the mental benefits remain in my subconscious for later use via instinct.
Mokuso is a great reminder for me everyday to empty my mind and quiet that voice. To listen for a deeper voice. Not one that speaks to me but one that speaks through me.
#karatelife #karate #karatetraining #jkabelarus #jkakarate #sangakarate #маедумкі #думкіпрагалоўнае #думкіўгалаве #вместесарчи #sangadojo #osikasensei (at Sanga Karate Shotokan Club) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUZQNQCq-3q/?utm_medium=tumblr
