“LaBare creates her artwork using objects that connect to significant experiences in her past. In Frenchican, LaBare’s childhood memories are symbolized by little trinkets that represent aspects of her French and Mexican heritage. The wooden cigar box, for example, hid her “secret treasures” when she was a kid and represents her Mexican roots, while a small plate that depicts the Eiffel Tower shows her French heritage.”  -Valerie Duarte, Guest Curator at MOLAA

Elise Bernal (US, b. 1991)

“Each brightly colored and patterned creature in this group is unique. A small tag attached to each member of this family tells of a hardship encountered by the artist. Bernal constructed these figures as a response to various struggles:  issues with her identity, living through the passing of family members, and supporting her mother through cancer. They demonstrate her positivity and her belief that “the only true control [she has] is over what [she decides] to put into the world.”

“This series of sculptures was created during a time when the artist sought to bring balance and happiness into her life. She began to share compassion with others and learned of the power that a smile can have on another person. “Determination, self-discipline, and passion define the work of Dennis Lauterwasser. An experienced painter, Lauterwasser expresses an almost compulsive energy and fluidity. He creates work constantly and with effortless style. Working out of Arts and Services for the Disabled (ASD), an organization that provides art experiences for disabled artists, not only is painting a form of therapy for him but also a means of expression. Lauterwasser works with a rhythm akin to the meditative feelings we may experience during moments of reflection.” -Keila Rivera, Guest Curator at MOLAA

Artful Healing is organized as an exhibition that promotes the sharing of personal experiences related to healing. Healing is a complex process that has many different approaches. This exhibition highlights artists who use their work to understand and #grow from their struggles. Sharing these stories allows them to not only expose their vulnerabilities, but also to gain strength in the process.
