Do Not Monetise Fanfic!
In the year 2024 I shouldn't have to say this, but I caught someone monetising and it's like...what are you doing?!?
Do you want us to not be able to post fanfic online anymore?
Why are people this stupid?!
Good god!
Profiting off fanfic is illegal.
Remember Anne Rice and that whole shitshow!
DO NOT MONETISE YOUR FUCKING FANFIC!
How to keep fanfiction legal and avoid trouble with lawyers.
Important parts:
"Fans own copyright in their own original contributions to a fanwork — they don’t own anything about the underlying work it’s based on, but they do own what they have made," Rosenblatt says. "The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) allows copyright owners, including fan-authors, to request that something be taken down if it infringes copyright."
"The legality of fanfiction isn’t very controversial. As a matter of copyright and trademark law, the sort of noncommercial, transformative works that fans make tend to fit quite well into the definitions of non-infringing fair use," says Betsy Rosenblatt, a law professor teaching intellectual property law at U.C. Davis School of Law.
Noncommercial & Transformative are the key words.
In other words, as long as it's transformative work (ie. not copy/paste of the original) and noncommercial (ie. you can't make money off it), it's legal.
The exceptions are when IP falls back into the public domain as Sherlock Holmes recently has.
Unless your fanfic is of public domain properties, you cannot monetise it.
Personally, I don't care if you get sued.
I'm mad because I want to be able to continue writing and posting fanfic myself!
I'm a selfish bitch.
Get your own ass thrown in jail, whatever, but when you monetise fanfic, you're trying to take the rest of us down with you.
And for that, go fuck yourself.
Okay I woke up and heard about Tumblr+ and was not happy :(
So I wrote up this thing in like 3 hours with some crappy art and stuff just to get my thoughts out there of some way @staff can actually get some money without using @postplus, as everyone hates it.
If you have some ideas of your own or wanna draw some cursed pins you’d use go ahead!
(ignore all my spelling mistakes please, procreate doesn’t have spell checking)
Odd Private Message
It's been a while since anyone PMd me on FanFiction. So, when the email notification came through, just under a month late, I will admit that it filled me with dread.
Mostly because I'm shy and never know how to respond to people, but also for good reason:
DN WhatIf, who I'm aware has contacted authors on AO3 before, is apparently now approaching people through other sites where Project Copy-Knight can't automatically reach them. (Yet.)
Of course, I turned them down.
I know that monetization is an ongoing dispute within fandom, but that's a discussion for another time. I personally do not make any money from my fic writing. To do so can jeopardize the platform I host my writing on, and what AO3 stands for.
That said, if I don't gain monetarily from writing that already treads the line with IPs and Copyright Law, why would I consent to someone else's profit from my work?
If DN WhatIf wanted to support creators and user accessibility like they claim, they would 1) not monetize their uploads, and 2) post transformative content to AO3 which is acknowledged and consented to by the author in the form of Pod Fics or linked works, for all to access freely.
If you yourself are contacted by DN WhatIf, as the image above shows you do have the opportunity to opt out and block them. They are, at least, now asking for creator's consent before they profit from works.
I'm just disappointed, I guess, that people think it is okay to do this, and I want to make other creators aware if they too need to dust off their FanFiction account to check their PMs.
Making money on X (formerly known at twitter) through their Monetisation programme (an experiment)
Not many people are aware of this, but 𝕏 (formerly twitter) pays you a decent share of ad revenue, if your impressions (total views on all posts) exceeds 5 million in 3 months.
As an experiment, for 3 months, I moved all my social media activity to 𝕏. I used an account I've had for several years, but never really used. Mostly because I prefer Reddit, personally. But I wanted to try it.
So, instead of posting as I usually would on Reddit, Facebook, Instagram etc. I just moved all my internet activity to 𝕏.
The result was I exceeded 5mil impressions within 1.5months.
My account is @YourElfx, you can see I don't have a huge following yet, and mostly just posted as I usually would on other social media platforms. Connect with me there to find out more.
Final thoughts: Overall, I would not recommend doing this if you are not frequently active on social media. But if you are, I would advise considering it.
Poll: Capitalism and the monetisation of The Arts- how do you feel about promo campaigns for movies that encourage fast fashion and the over consumption/creation of objects that will be discarded after the novelty wears off? (Context down below, and please vote :) )
It’s so cool! I love being able to things related to the movie, take my money!
Don’t really care about it, not gonna go out of my way to buy any of it
I’ll buy a few things related to the movie collabs, but only things I’ll use
Hate it! So much capitalism and wastage and over consumption all 4 a movie!!!
This is a bigger issue to discuss about the focus on monetisation in the arts
A little more context:
I wanna see the Barbie movie, and at first I was enjoying the promo of the Barbie Fits and the set etc, however the more brand collabs that come out the more icky it makes me feel. I just know that so many of the clothes and random objects made for the promo will be thrown out once the novelty/tread ends, and it will contribute significantly to the wider problem of over consumption and capitalism in our society. Fast fashion is bad enough, and it’s worse when it’s endorsed like this like our planet is literally dying!
As an artist, I also just hate to see capitalism existing so blatantly with projects. (I get that Barbie is literally a commercial franchise and stuff, I just think it’s a great relèvent example for my feelings). I think when a project focuses so much on encouraging spending and consumption, it can impact how I view the work.
For example, I dislike a lot of Jukebox musicals because they just feel like an excuse to try and make a shit ton of money with a project of limited artistic intention/integrity, and it just becomes a spectacle of wealth and capitalism in full force. Capitalism is antithetical to the Arts, and so when a project goes all in on it- it feels yucky to me.
Want to again clarify: NO HATE TO THE BARBIE MOVIE OR PEOPLE EXCITED ABOUT IT!!! I am genuinely happy for you guys, I just think it’s a timely example to express some wider opinions I hold! Please don’t take it personally!
