Urpi debut? Urpi debut. Ft. bleeding heart dove feather dyeing.
Dragon waking up in the medical wing, dazed, confused, hurting, exhausted, but very much alive. So of course he’s trying to get up and get back into the fight.
They needed everyone and everything they had, they needed him there, he needed him there. Eight hundred years had lead to this final push.
But a hand presses him back into the cot.
“Rest, waway. We’ve won.”
He's alive? He lived to see them through to victory? That can't be right. He's not supposed to be alive. He's supposed to have given everything he's had, body and soul included to protect everyone. It's a fate he's resigned himself to for years.
But then, when has fate ever listened to what Dragon wanted?
Before he can ask Mamay for details about the status of the receeding flood waters or how many casualties they incurred, a comically loud snore draws his attention to his side. His own waway is laying beside him, wrapped in several layers of bandages and with a sleepy smile on his face. No doubt dreaming of the massive victory feast yet to come. Sabo is dozing next to him, equally bandaged and holding onto his little brother like a stretchy teddy bear with Koala smiling at the sight as she stands watch over them. Robin is laying down too, along with all the other Straw hats, some of whom are falling out of their cots and onto the floor.
And in the cot right next to Dragon, his husband's broad chest is rising and falling as he sleeps with a more peaceful expression than Dragon has seen in years, four little ebony-winged angels tucked against his side as if guarding him even in the midst of their own slumber.
Seeing all of this and with Urpi gently carding a hand through his hair, how could Dragon not take her advice to rest a while?
A day in the life of Monkey D. Urpi
Be it canon or modern AU, I’m glad we all agree Dragon's two truths and a lie options will always go CRAZY
Naturally, Dragon doesn’t remember such an event occurring but he does remember almost always stuck to his Mamay's side when in the garden whether that be having his tiny hand enveloped in her own or sat in her lap under the merciful shade of a large tree, eyes squinting at the sunlight breaking through the leaves.
When she eventually relayed the story to an older Dragon, the faintest feeling of the past washed over him like all his bones humming a song he didn’t know the name of.
The video his Tayta provide - who ruffled his hair just a tad too rough like always and akin-ned him to that of an adorably hyper hummingbird and how he had to run (not walk) after him once he accidentally broke his rocking horse, what with him bouncing off the walls and also somehow the ceiling in that state - also helped jog the fuzzy memory.
This also explains all the soft and much-too-larger-to-be-stuck-in-any-orifice snail plush dolls he received from that point…
Stole his mama’s face
Urpi very faux calmly grabbing Garp by the collar and pulling down to eye level.
“What do you mean “our son is in prison”?”
Garp hadn't spoken a word of God Valley to anyone, and knowing the kind of man he was, nobody was expecting that to change even in these unprecedented circumstances. They at least had the papers to cling to for a thrilling tale.
That's not good enough for Urpi. She never expected anything less but honesty and accountability from her husband and that wasn't about to stop now. He was going to look her in the eyes and tell her everything what happened on that island in the West Blue down to the last minute detail. Tell her why their kind beautiful boy was being shackled like a dog for helping refugees.
Even when Garp finishes his story, Urpi's grip has not lessened on his collar. If anything its tightened like the coils of a python. There's a steeliness in her gaze but also a flash of immense hurt.
"Dove, I'm sorry-"
"DON'T!" He hasn't heard her voice this harsh since the day they met. "Do not waste those words on me. Not when our son needs them the most. He goes free tonight. Either by your hands or mine. If it's by yours, you are bringing him home no matter what. And if it's by mine, you will never see either of us again. Make your decision, Hero of the Marines, before it's made for you"
Dragon does go free by the end of the night. But he doesn't go home with Garp. All he's left with is the image of two pairs of stormy eyes who look at him with nothing but disgust.
Almost finished with my Enies Lobby re-watch and at the part where Lucci killed 500 hostages as a teenager because their weakness in surrendering to protect their king made them expendable criminals.
And it got me thinking that Kong probably wanted Dragon to turn out like Lucci. A killing machine with nothing but loyalty to the World Government.
There were a couple of times he suggested to Garp and Urpi that they send Dragon to Guanhao in his childhood to begin his conditioning training as soon as possible. Plenty of Marines and Cipher Pol agents have done the same with their children. You can imagine how well that went over.
The kid was running circles around the other children in Foosha, physically and mentally speaking. But socially? Boy was drowning. His only friends were those scraggly orphans that became his siblings, and the snails in his mother’s garden.
He didn’t know when to speak. Didn’t know when to shut up. Didn’t know when something was a joke or not. Blew his little top off over trivial things. And he just… cried. All the time. About anything and everything.
But he was strong and he was clever.
If Kong could just get his son and that wife of his to see reason, surely the Cipher Pol instructors could use his awkwardness to break him of that bleeding heart…
Seas knew the Navy wouldn’t be hard enough on him to do that.
Last year I floated the idea of Garpi dressing up as a pirate and a Marine for Halloween and while I 100% stand by it, all I’m thinking about now is her actual pirate friends reaction to said costume!
Roger is appalled, annoyed even! This is not how it’s supposed to be! He’s supposed to be the pirate love of Garp's life, not her! Doesn’t she know she’s upsetting the delicate balance of the universe by putting on that tricorn (and looking great in it)?!
(All it takes to end his rant is a well timed cheeky comment about her capturing him as her treasure for the day, as both a pirate and a Shandian she knows proper precious Gold when she sees it~. He’s red faced and muttering from the rest of the day)
Rocks is on the other side of spectrum, he’s ecstatic! Downright giddy as he tries to slyly persuade Urpi to embrace her current attire all year round! Wasn’t there such an undeniable thrill in being a criminal? (she reminds him she has very much been a criminal with an extol bounty that could rival his own) and how the whole crew would be more than happy to make room for her aboard! Hell, he'll even kick someone out if need be! What about Ochoku? He can kick out out Ochoku in a heartbeat!
(Urpi naturally turns him down but Xebec isn’t someone who gives up so easily. He'll win her over yet, he can feel it! He vows it on the stars in the heavenly sky! Odd though, he could have sworn it wasn’t night yet…Oh hey Garp! How long have you been charging up that fist exactly!)
What I love is that while Garp was probably just a wee bit salty about having to dress up as the thing he spends his whole job fighting against, the SECOND his ears start picking up on Roger saying that Urpi can't be a pirate he does an instant 180
"ROGER, YOU BASTARD, ARE YOU SAYING MY DOVE WOULDN'T MAKE A GOOD PIRATE?! THAT'S SUCH A LOAD OF BULLSHIT I'M SURPRISED THERE AIN'T ANY FLIES BUZZING AROUND YOUR MOUSTACHE! SHE'D BE A GREAT PIRATE! THE BEST PIRATE! SHE'D PIRATE CIRCLES AROUND YOUR TACKY ASS!! 😤😤😤"
Rocks raises his mug with a hearty "Vohahahaha! Amen to that, brother! 🍺"
"YOU STAY OUTTA THIS YA DAMN PORCUPINE!"
"DON'T YE GO CALLIN' HIM PORCUPINE, GARP! THAT'S OUR THING!"
And Shakky in her Elvira gown takes a break from winking at a blushing Rayleigh who's holed himself up in the corner sighs and goes to top off Urpi's cocktail while bringing out her trusty spray bottle of rum to remind the boys that the "no fighting inside the bar" rule still needs to be followed on Halloween.
I just had an epiphany that Garp's "Hero of the Marines" title likely means "Hero of the Marines" As in, he was the one who saved the marines on God Valley by making his way to the island to fight Roger.
To fight Roger.
That was his only reason for being there. That was what he was doing the entire time as slaves and God Valley's citizens were in chains and being slaughtered like cattle. Not even sparing them a glance while Dragon was busting his ass to try and rescue as many people as he could from the monsters disguised as humans they were both working for.
Every three years.
Every three years atrocities like this one have taken place. His father has been in the navy for decades and a vice admiral for half of that time. He really never caught wind of this even once before today? How many people they've saved have been sacrificed to entertain these devils at the top of the world? How many platoons have been beheaded to keep any accountability away? How much blood is truly on their hands?
After the dust settles, after Dragon has his cry, after Garp is bestowed the medals and accolades, the older marine only sees one face in the crowd of cheering soldiers.
The face of his son. Looking at him with an emotion Garp has never seen on his gentle, sensitive son before.
It looks like hatred.
What happened at God Valley had broken his heart, Garp knew, but it hadn’t broken his spirit.
That came later. Long after the ceremony. Sat around the dinner table, dead silent, both of them picking at a full plate.
The skies had been gray and heavy since they came ashore in Goa. No rain, but the low rumble of thunder promising a storm when all the ships in Foosha were moored up for the night.
Dinner ends, the table is cleared. They fall into an old rhythm they knew very well. Urpi washes the dishes, garp dries them, Dragon puts them in their proper places.
Everything feels like it could be normal until a dinner plate is fumbled.
The uneasy peace shatters with the ceramic, and Garp watches the fury that’s been simmering just under the surface boil over.
There’s a lightning strike somewhere outside, close enough to rattle the glass in the window frames, and before the ringing in Garp’s ears even stops, Dragon is throwing open the back door and slamming it shut behind him with such force that the light fixtures shake.
Urpi lays a freshly dried hand on his arm as she steps past him and out of the kitchen, taking Red Nola and a jacket from its hook before she gives chase into the jungle.
There’s a still moment after her footfalls fade out into the night before the rain begins to fall in cold, heavy sheets.
Garp is left in an empty home to pick up the pieces.
