MONO
About my all time favorite album, mono, but not specifically mono's meaning, but how mono builds it’s message. Mono is a grey world, as described by Taehyung in Namjoon’s world things can have various meanings, nothing is exactly what it seems, he is a talented lyricist who challenges in every way to go beyond our own vision.
Mono doesn’t have an official translation, what we know is based in what we can understand of how he is saying the words, creating various meanings and an ambigous message, like in Seoul, where the pronunciation is similar to “soul”, which can give a whole other meaning to the song.
Luis Villoro, has a book called “La Significación del Silencio”, in this essay he talks about how the silence makes the word goes back to its original form, comparing to the hindu philosophy, explaining what is Brahma, in the book: “Eso… los conocedores de Brahma lo llaman lo imperecedero. No es ni grueso ni delgado, ni corto ni largo, ni semejante al fuego ni parecido al agua. No es sombra ni oscuridad, ni aire ni espacio, desprendido, sin gusto, sin olor, sin ojos, sin oídos, sin voz, sin mente, sin brillo, sin aliento, sin boca, sin medida, carece de dentro y de fuera.”
When Namjoon did this, he broke our ability to give a meaning, to nominate, he is making us coming back to the original self, what is already there, which doesn’t need to be nominated. We return to the initial self, which is in our intimate, we only need to feel it with that, mono can be a place, a city, rain, loneliness, company, or nothing, or everything, life or vacuo. Like Namjoon said, it’s a playlist for us.
