MONSTERS OF ROCK CRUISE (MONSTERWOOD) – PART 1
“The Looooove Boooaaaaat, soon will be making another run . . .”
My Facebook page is generally a bit “delayed.” In the crazy, unpredictable world of the music business, you’re never quite sure if something is going to happen until it’s already happened. Well, we had a great time on the sold out Monsters of Rock cruise, and almost everything went perfectly. The weather did not cooperate, and we did have our big outdoor “pool deck” performance rained out and moved inside the ship, which was one of the only negatives. I ended up using a drum kit that was exactly half the size of what I was going to be using up top, and NO DRUM RISER. I know, I know, you’re saying, “Awwwww, poor Ken, he didn’t have a monster kit or a drum riser, how sad . . .” I can hear the mocking, so please quiet down . . .
I had a double bass, 4 tom, 8 cymbal dual hi-hat rig ordered for the main stage, and the only glimpse I had of it was when it was wrapped under plastic! (See the photo.) Well, when you have planned for playing that size kit and you are down to a kit half that size, it’s a bit of a mental adjustment. However, in the famous words of Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, “I’m a professional. I will not let this (small bread) affect my performance. I will rise above it.” On the positive side the show went great. (That was the most important thing anyway, aside from not pulling a “Titanic” on the cruise.)
During the trip I was able to talk to a number of friends that I had not seen in a quite some time from bands like Slaughter, Quiet Riot, Firehouse, Britney Fox, and others, and we met so many awesome fans and new friends as well. The food was great, the cruise was smooth sailing for the most part, the sound and stage crew were amazing, and the staff on the ship was very helpful as well. A plus is I did not see anyone get seasick either! (A big plus…)
What really made the trip amazing was that you could go and watch a friend’s band play, and then 10 minutes later watch another band, go grab some food at a great restaurant, head back to your cabin for a bathroom break, and go catch another act. It was like being at a music festival, with all the convenience of being at your house, haha. You could leave at any time and not have to worry about parking or getting back in. For music fans, this is the way to do it! I highly recommend the cruise to anyone interested in the style of music the cruise is going with. (I’ve seen a pretty huge variety on different cruises.)
I am including some more photos from the trip and will include more of them in Part Dux, hopefully posted next week. I also have some video that I (hopefully) get around to splicing together if anyone is interested . . . Oh, one last minor disappointment; I did not get to meet Captain Stubing, Julie, or Isaac. Maybe next time . . .
It's only 11 months and 1 week away. Who's going on #MORC #WestCoast #MonsterWood ??? #Mexico
