Morally brave men and women, who can face up to church-going gangs of hooded murderers; don't seem to be many morally brave people left in stock. We appear to be in a condition of profound poverty there.
Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain, Mark Twain Tonight! (1967)
Richard Dawkins interviews australian philosopher Perter Singer. They talk about morality, evolution and, the ethical treatment of animals.
Moral Hypocrisy
The Moral hypocrisy I see in this country, and elsewhere I am sure, is in short, staggering. We wave our signs and shout our outrage at the bloodshed in lybia. The Lybian people have chosen to rebel against a tyrannical and oppressive government. Rebellion does not come with out bloodshed. Good for them. let them fight for their freedom, just as our ancestors fought for ours.
Where is the moral outrage over children going to bed hungry because their parent are working 4 jobs to keep a roof over their heads in a shitty economy. Or maybe they go to bed hungry because their parents are strung out on dope. where is the sigh waving over that.
Where is the moral outrage over the lack of treatment available to the mentally ill, and the lack of options available to their families? we wait until some one shoots up a high school, or a parking lot full of people or the work place. Then all we want to talk about is gun control. Why because guns are tangible , they can be seen, touched, taken apart and understood. mental illness cannot. We live in a disconnected, disaffected culture. and each of us has a part in that. Gun control is safer, we can say we dont own a gun therefore we are not a part of the problem. Taking ownership of how we treat each other is just a little to personal, and actually requires some effort rather than just words and laws.
