My Thoughts on the Last Arc of Magi (long)
Alibaba helps Kougyoku rebuild the economy of the Kou Empire. This part of the arc isn’t bad but chapters focusing on economics when it’s an action manga for as long as it did, felt like beating the bush. Little did I know what was coming.
Alibaba and Morgiana become engaged shortly after reuniting despite their lack of romantic development. Their bond was never well explored outside of them being travel (and ass kicking) companions. We don’t see many heartfelt moments between the couple or how much they mean to each other; we’re just supposed to assume they have romantic feelings based on their role as main characters of the opposite gender. Hakuryuu’s feeling felt more developed because we see his feelings before confessing to Morgiana.
The arc really goes downhill after Sinbad rewrites the rhuk. The Man vs. World conflict waters down the cast we all know prior to this arc. The biggest example is Morgiana. She’s physically the most strongest member as one of the three main characters but she’s useless for most the arc. She doesn’t show up for several chapters, along with many others under the same situation as her, until the end where they all show up one by one in a very cheesy fashion.
I thought Sinbad was a fitting final boss: he’s incredibly strong and smart with a high status and has the most Djinn equips. What made him so fascinating was his vision of the perfect world and his ability to accomplish it. He wanted world peace and did so using absolute power and control, making him a dictator and anti-hero. His role as a promising antagonist was short-lived when he “battles” Alibaba, Aladdin, Hakuryuu and Judal which mainly consisted of debating and the party persuading Sinbad out of his vision of what’s right and wrong in the world. His death didn’t properly grip the hearts of readers, it felt so inconclusive with no emotional good byes or regrets. He just died.
Characters come off as simple minded when they’re so easily swayed by words. The arc seriously lacks in action, everything is resolved talking out of situations. Conclusions feel lazy or rushed since a resolution usually happens within one or two chapters. This also makes characters feel two dimensional due to everyone being so monolithic with everyone being so optimistic and righteous. An interesting cast consists of different ways of thinking, acting, and going about things. Which Magi previously had until this arc.
Arba becomes a bystander who stopped caring what David/Sinbad does, despite having been obsessed with the values of David previously. David’s plans and intentions are easily proven baseless he contemplates if what he’s doing is truly what he wants. So now neither of the major antagonists seem evil, and they don’t even seem to know what they’re doing. Arba doesn’t die, she isn’t even punished for murdering and manipulating people. David is swept away due to the “power of friendship” cliche and it’s so anticlimactic, it never felt like he put up much of a fight.
Readers who have only focused on the world that the characters live in (aside from Alma Torran) are all of a sudden taught about these outside forces connected to the world of Magi that are only now becoming relevant and oddly convinient for Alibaba and Co. to avoid conflict.
Resolutions to the multiple problems in this arc are solved so half-assed and some not even solved at all. It feels rushed with no thrill and the answers only confuse the readers more. I’ve gotten to the point where I just rolled along whatever was thrown at me, but I was and am disappointed about how the entire arc was executed. It’s such a lazy, rushed, and just over all bad ending.
