Two of my moss jars ⛰🪴

The first is in a square vodka bottle and the moss I got on a hike at a national park today. The whitish moss is Deer Moss and the other moss is common moss.

The second is in a little glass box I got from my grandma. I put some common moss from Virginia in it along with a mini terrarium that has some cactus seeds (trying to propagate the mini kit oof..) and a few chia seeds lol.

✨Hi welcome to my moss jar tutorial✨

What you’ll need

Jar with a lid

Moss

Rocks (optional)

Okay so first you want to make sure your jar is big enough for the moss, I’ll be using a mason jar I found at the dollar general, if you have a glass jar from a candle that would work great as well, just make sure it has a seal!

If you choose to use rocks fill them up fill them up to a little less then a fourth of the glass. A lot of people use rocks for filtration but it doesn’t really make a difference, I use them cause I think it makes the jar look pretty!

Next gather your moss! It’s always safer to grab more then you need! You can find moss everywhere I just got this moss from my backyard but you can find some pretty cool moss on hiking trails. To get the moss out of the ground a pocket knife would be the best option for keeping roots intact but your hands will work fine as well!

After you pick your moss pack the jar with dirt, you could use dirt you find outside but it’s always better to use gardening dirt. Make sure you pack that soil down! Leave enough room at the top for the moss to fit comfortably!

Next add your moss! Moss is a super forgiving plant to work with and will easily tear apart leaving you with a perfect shape for the jar, feel free to add other small plants to the jar. (I added clovers)

Make sure you have a spray bottle, in my picture I’m useing a bottle from some hairspray, any small spray bottles work just make sure you clean them out! I recommend 5 squirts once a week, if you’re doing it right the jar should have some condensation on the inside glass.

one of my moss jars (his name is Bertie) is currently Thriving™ which is wonderful and all but I feel like he might be cursed because every other moss jar I’ve had die after a week or two even tho they are kept in basically the same conditions??? Idk maybe he’s just vibing
