What the fuck happened to the motherstone? Have we seen it since the 5th book when Max used a shard to wake up Chronos? It was built up and then forgotten
Well, we can see as of book 8 that that storyline is abandoned. I do believe it's supposed to be a build up that will supposedly lead to a longer series — take note that Kazu limited it into 9 when Book 6 was released (which was post-amnesia due to bacterial meningitis), where book 5 seems to imply that Emily and Co will face off the Guardian Council formed by the Elves using what little is left of the motherstone. Based on the Elf King's and Max's conversation at the start of book 5:
Chronos was supposed to be the first, chosen personally by Max. The rest is to be chosen by the Elf King. It's honestly baffling to see something that is of utter importance and danger to the enture plot and the world itself — be rendered forgotten that easily. It's abandoned in favor of introducing Amulet's sci-fi fantasy aspects.
