The MOTHMAN of Point Pleasant. In West Virginia folklore, the Mothman is a creature reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant area from November 15, 1966, to December 15, 1967. The first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register dated November 16, 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something". The national press soon picked up the reports and helped spread the story across the United States. The Mothman was introduced to a wider audience by Gray Barker in 1970 and was later popularized by John Keel in his 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies, claiming that there were supernatural events related to the sightings, and a connection to the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The book was later adapted into a 2002 film, starring Richard Gere. An annual festival in Point Pleasant is devoted to the Mothman legend. The true events regarding the case of 'The Mothman of Point Pleasant' have since been covered in a full length documentary film by 'Small Town Monsters', of which this image was licensed for use as the film's poster. There was this class I was teaching, a class of like 3rd graders? I think? And I was wearing this shirt:

And one of the boys goes, "What's that on your shirt? Is it a demon?"

And I explained that, no. It was Mothman.

And he asks, "What is it from?"

I'm like ?????

He clarifies, "Is he from a video game or...?"

So I'm like, "Oh nonono. He's not from anything. He is this creature that a bunch of people saw in West Virginia in the 60s before a bridge disaster."

Boy's eyes get wide. "He's REAL?!"

And I'm like 'aww man I really stepped in it now. I am an educator and I don't want to confuse him but I can't adequately explain the nuance of human beliefs in a way he can understand with such a limited amount of time' but then I looked at the clock and realized it was the last day of school and we had about 15 minutes left so I was like fuck it. "He sure is. Mothman is totally real. Google it."

Boy runs back to his friends excitedly to tell them about the flying monster from West Virginia he just learned about.

I'm sure his parents are thrilled.
