So much new snow !! Hopefully Pixie gets go skiing tomorrow , should be best skiing this whole year !! ( if summit gets power back on … they running on generators right now ! )

Karakoram Highway connecting Pakistan to China. Known to the Chinese as the "Road of Friendship", this highway connects Pakistan to China through the Karakoram Ridge. Crosses the Khunjerab Pass at an altitude of 4,964 meters (second highest in the world). Its construction began in 1959 and it was completed after 27 years. The Karakoram is an incredible feat of engineering, spanning 1,300 km across three mountain ranges of the Himalayas and the Hindukush.

Additional stretches of the road were completed later, but opening of the Rogers Pass road made it possible to drive from the Atlantic to the Pacific without leaving Canada. I fondly remember a trans-Canada trip in that year.

I can be certain of the date as I had just acquired a new car (and a new camera) and was on my way to spend a summer at Ohio State in Columbus for a special program. My first drive alone across the US and full summer in the humid heat of the northeast!

SPO -> NYC Day One: Beginnings When you leave your home of the last two years behind, frantically and disorganized, do not look back. Do not take one last shower in your old home, one last cup of coffee in the kitchen, one last walk around the block with the dog. Pile everything into the car and leave, head for the hills and out of the valleys, and meet the new beginnings exactly where they left you last time.

La ruta nacional 52 descendiendo desde Paso de Jama (4230 m) hasta la Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy, 2007.

This main road between the Atacama in Chile and interior Argentina is rated one of the world’s more dangerous routes. The highest point at 4810 m is inside Chile, and the pass at the international frontier is substantially lower. Given the altitude, the drive between Antofagasta at sea level in Chile and Salta at 1000 m  would be breathtaking in a literal sense even if the road itself provided no thrills.
