LOST IN IRE (Mourned)- ALBUM REVIEW
Sub-genre: death metal/hardcore
Band Members: David Coughlin (drums), Brendan Coughlin (guitars/vocals), and Cody Johnson (bass)
Mourned was formed in 2014 however it wasn't until 2024 this album was released as their first full length debut album, with the recording help of Chris Johnson and various recording studios. Put bluntly, this album is just about everything I want from death metal and hardcore. They blend the blast beats with technical and "chugga-chugga" riffs without it feeling boring like a lot of deathcore artists do. Like many metal albums, every track on this albums sounds similiter, following the same formula, but i don't find myself growing bored and wanting to skip the album. If it was up to me i would've loved some shredding or a solo around the middle, despite this i still thoroughly enjoy every track.
Vocals are extremely important for any DM album, and i can pretty confidently say Brendan Coughlin is a great vocalist. I would've liked to hear some extra variation in his growls or maybe some screeches but never the less he's done a great job here. (his work on guitars is sick too, I love the tone he's acquired here.)
I think I've been desensitized to drums though all my listening, (and that's on my fault) i also play guitar myself so i tend to listen to the guitar more. Never the less, anytime I tuned into David Coughlin's drumming i was never disappointed. It's nothing special in terms of what I've listened too but his work his easily nothing to scoff at.
My favorite track would probably be summon the storm, i love a good buildup and this song accomplishes that easily before erupting into the usual pilers of the hardcore genre. The main riff comes back here and there in the background of the other instruments. Brendan's vocals again are just awesome, and i like the simplicity of the drums during certain parts.
overall this is just a good death metal album with little criticisms for me to make, id highly recommend you to give it a listen. I'm highly looking forward to what else is to come for this band.
