“Does such a thing as 'the fatal flaw,' that showy dark crack running down the middle of a life, exist outside literature? I used to think it didn't. Now I think it does. And I think that mine is this: a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs” - The Secret History, Donna Tartt
So my Dark Academia phase is back and suddenly I am gripped with this longing to be back at University, absorbing knowledge, reading poetry and debating with my fellow intellectuals. Obviously I can’t do that right now, pandemilovato and all, so I’ll be filling that void by reading some dark academia books.
Here are some books I’m interested in reading soon:
• If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio (currently reading)
• Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
• Vengeful by V. E. Schwab
• A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
• The Devil Makes Three by Tori Bovalino (10/08/2021)
• A Leason in Vengeance by Victoria Lee (03/08/2021)
I have been waking up early for over a week now and I feel great! I feel more productive because I get to catch the dawn sky and also do some chores (watering plants, etc). Yesterday was more productive than I have been throughout this month, which has been a huge slump for me... (I got this cute badge from my denim jeans 👖, but i rather use it in my tumblr than wearing it)

When I worked as a writing tutor one thing I noticed a lot of people struggled with was organizing their essays. You could have some great ideas but still have an essay that doesn’t make sense. Below I’ve laid out the basic outline that I follow whenever I write one my essays. This is something that’s helped me a lot personally, but bear in mind that it might not work for everyone.
Introduction: The goal of your introduction is to get the reader’s attention and prepare them for what is going to come next aka your marvelous essay. Think of it like a funnel that starts out very broad and then narrows down to your thesis.
Opening statement: something attention getting like a question, quote, startling statistic etc.
Background info: sets up the context for the essay.
Thesis: this is a fancy word for a sentence or two that sums up your argument.
Body Paragraphs: You can have as many of these as you feel are needed to cover your topic but the key thing is to make sure each one relates back to the thesis in some way.
First sentence: explain the topic/argument for this paragraph.
Support: elaborate on and/or support your first sentence with details, facts, quotes, stats, etc.
Last sentence: summarize arguement for paragraph and relate back to thesis.
Repeat these steps as many times as you need.
Conclusion: The goal for the conclusion is to remind the reader what your original thesis was and summarize your argument in a memorable way. Think of it as a reverse funnel starting with your thesis which is super narrow and then applying it in a more general way.
First sentence: restate thesis (don’t just copy/paste what you wrote in the introduction, repeat it in different words).
So what: Tell the reader why the information in your paper is important and what you want them to do with that information. I like to think of this as the mic drop moment of my essay.
And there you have it, you’ve written an essay! I hope this helped someone and if you need further clarifcation on anything let me know in the comments.
I haven’t done much studying for language-learning but here are my notes for my Chemistry midterms exam tomorrow + a few cards I made (as a homework from my psychologist).
