We just started learning about the gilded age in my AP US history class, and to introduce it he asked “does anyone know the definition of gilded” and like in that tone teachers use when no one can answer their question…and some other students tried and got it wrong and then I went “when you cover something in a thin layer of gold?” And he went “yes? You’re the first person to know that in 6 years” AND IM SO GLAD HE DIDNT ASK HOW I KNOW CAUSE HOW WOULD I EXPLAIN THAT ITS ONLY CAUSE REMUS DESCRIBED JANUS’S FACE AS LOOKING LIKE IT WAS GILDED IN 24 KARAT GOLD AND HE KINDA WANTED TO LICK IT IN METAPHYSICAL DETERMINISM AND I REMEMBERED THAT

Not a question, but: The most recent fic has the summary line "Remus has a pair of pacers on his hands", and I was briefly very concerned because my brain went right from pacer to pacemaker. This let me to believe Remus had a magical defibrillator, and was going to be forced to use it, and I was not ready for that angst.

Rereading some Metaphysical Determinism, b/c it’s one of my comfort rereads, and there’s something I’ve wondered about whenever I read Tyndall Effect. What exactly happens when Remus has visions? From the description, it sounds unpleasant...

it is, in fact, quite unpleasant

when he has visions, Remus falls into a trance state that resembles something in the approximate area of severe dissociating and/or having an absence seizure

The severity varies - sometimes he can feel them coming on in advance,  sometimes he drifts in and out between lucidity and visions for a few minutes at a time for however long it goes on, and sometimes he can be in a sort of half-trance where he can still mostly function, just very distracted and prone to zoning out.

During the worst episodes, he usually does not react or respond to outside stimuli, and at best can draw or paint his visions in this state, though more often he doesnt move and is pretty much unresponsive

this trance state can last anywhere from only a few seconds to several hours, and on the shorter ones it often hard to tell it’s even happening because he just seems to be sitting still. he prety regularly has to ask people to start over talking, because he’ll have drifted off and his conversation partner didnt notice
