In the same way that Max and Idelle's relationship in the brothel on Nassau had the best representation of that work I've seen on screen, the very calm, 'But it makes such financial sense' attitude that this man, Mr Oliver the mainstream Guthrie family financial advisor has about slavery is the best in kind about 'what ordinary people probably thought about slavery' type of representation. Banality of evil yes, but also, the bland face of someone stating that obvious fact that exploitation is so much more lucrative than paying employees.
