"Mr. Thomas, approximately how big can a canis lupus get?"
Mr. Thomas's hand stilled in front of the chalkboard, leaving the sentence he was writing incomplete. He turned around slowly and said, "pardon?"
Aiden Clark stared right back at him with a huge grin on his face and repeated his question. "How big can a canis lupus get?"
Mr. Thomas went silent. It was 8:05am in the morning, and the bell had rung just five minutes ago, signalling the start of the school day. He had just been telling his students to hand in their History homework when Aiden had fired the random question at him. Mr. Thomas wasn't sure how to reply. "Er...a canis lupus, like a dog?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Why did you say the scientific name instead of calling it a 'dog'?"
"Because, sir, I pride myself in knowing the proper titles of our household pets." Aiden said formally, which was very unlike him. He didn't look any different than he did normally - wild dirty-blond hair, unblinking red eyes, and a short-sleeved sweater with a big yellow smiley face printed in the front.
"Right." Mr. Thomas said slowly. "Well, Aiden, I am not a science teacher, so I do not know the approximate size a canis lupus can get. I'm sorry. Perhaps you should try asking Ms. Higginbottom next period."
Aiden deflated, looking supremely disappointed. "I understand, Mr. Thomas."
Mr. Thomas decided to move on without dwelling on this peculiar matter. "Alrighty then, as I was saying, your History homework is due today. Now, I've already given you all a two-day extension, so today is the hard deadline. Unfortunately, if it isn't finished, it will be a zero."
The class shuffled uneasily.
He started to walk over to Ashlyn Banner, who sat at the very front of the class. She looked slightly terrified and her eyes flitted down to the empty homework paper in front of her. "I'll be coming around to collect your--yes, Aiden, what is it?"
Aiden's hand had shot up into the air. "Mr. Thomas, where do you buy your cologne?"
Mr. Thomas stopped in his tracks. "...I don't wear cologne, Aiden."
"Really? 'Cause you smell really good today," Aiden said without an ounce of hesitation. The class tittered.
Mr. Thomas took off his glasses and massaged his eyes. As he did so, Aiden turned and passed a piece of paper to Ashlyn, who looked down in surprise. They exchanged a look and Aiden mouthed something, which made Ashlyn's eyes widen. Without a second glance at the blonde boy, she whipped out her pencil and started to scribble furiously on her own homework paper, copying what was written on Aiden's paper.
Blissfully unaware of what had just happened, Mr. Thomas put his glasses back on and said, "thank you, Aiden. I guess. Alrighty--"
"Mr. Thomas, if you don't use cologne, then could you mind telling me what kind of shampoo you use? See, my hair is pretty curly, and my mom is always telling me to take care of it. Your hair is super silky and shiny and smooth, and I want mine to be just like yours!" Aiden chirped loudly.
"Aiden, I need to start the class and collect the homework. If you don't mind, could I answer your questions after class?" Mr. Thomas asked, exasperated. While his attention was on Aiden, Ashlyn turned around and slid the paper Aiden had passed to her earlier to Ben Clark. Ben picked it up, scanned it over, and started to write as quickly as he could on his own paper. After he was done, he sent Aiden's paper towards Logan Fields, who sat diagonally across from him.
The brunette boy copied it within a few seconds and then passed it to Taylor Hernandez, who looked like she might pass out from relief when she got it.
Meanwhile, Aiden was asking random questions one after another, not letting Mr. Thomas think. The teacher was getting rather impatient now, and after Aiden asked his fifteenth question - "did you know that rats were trained to rescue people from burning buildings?" - he finally snapped.
"Aiden, please, I will answer all of these questions after class! If you do not want an automatic zero, please be quiet while I collect the homework!"
Aiden folded his hands and gave his teacher a sweet smile. "Yes, Mr. Thomas."
Mr. Thomas let out a sigh. Seriously, what has gotten into this boy today? He held out his hand in front of Ashlyn. She hesitantly handed him her homework.
Mr. Thomas's eyebrows went up when he saw her paper. He could have sworn it had been blank just a moment before, but now it was covered in hastily written answers. There was no way Ashlyn could have answered those in such a short amount of time. He frowned down at her, and she averted his gaze.
Shrugging, he moved on to the next student, which happened to be Aiden.
"Where is your homework, Aiden?" He asked.
"Oh, it's in my bag. Lemme get it out." Aiden said leisurely, and he made a whole show of turning around and zipping his backpack open. Mr. Thomas tapped his foot as Aiden rummaged through his stuff.
"If you don't have it, Aiden..."
"No, no, it's in here somewhere." Aiden said, though his voice was starting to get a little panicky.
"Mr. Thomas!"
Mr. Thomas and Aiden both turned to Ashlyn, who had stood up.
"Er-I think I forgot to put my name on my paper," she said.
"Oh! Well, here you go." Mr. Thomas handed back her paper. When his back was turned, Aiden made a bunch of gestures at Ben, who pointed at Logan, who pointed at Taylor, who pointed at Tyler, who was still copying answers down.
Tyler set his pencil down and quickly gave Aiden's paper back to his sister, who gave it back to Logan, who gave it back to Ben, who managed to give it back to Aiden just as Mr. Thomas re-collected Ashlyn's homework.
"Here ya go, sir!" Aiden said happily, passing his slightly wrinkled paper to his teacher. "My homework - all done!"
"Thank you, Aiden." Mr. Thomas said, but he was getting a bit suspicious. He maintained eye contact with the blonde boy for a few seconds before moving along. I'm probably just being paranoid. Maybe I should ask Jasmine to get me some pills to help me stay awake later.
Aiden let out a deep sigh of relief and sent a thumbs up to Ashlyn. She whispered a quick but meaningful Thank you. He made an a-ok sign with his hand and grinned.
Ben, Logan, Taylor, and Tyler all managed to hand in their homework. Unbeknownst to their teacher, they had all heavily relied on Aiden, who had been the only one that had done his homework the night before.
"Aiden, you're my savior. I'll treat you to some ice cream later." Taylor exclaimed as the class filed out of the room an hour later. She had grateful tears in her eyes and she comically sobbed into Aiden's shoulder.
Aiden laughed. "You're all very welcome! But I think Tyler saying 'thank you' will suffice as a reward."
"...thanks." Tyler muttered under his breath.
"What was that?" Aiden cupped his ear with his hand. "I couldn't hear you."
"Thank you, snot-face!" Tyler practically yelled, a vein popping in his forehead.
"The last part was unnecessary..." Logan sweat-dropped.
"Good enough for me!" Aiden sang.
"Seriously, though, how did you have the energy to do the homework after..." Ashlyn trailed off, not wanting to talk about the Phantom Dimension too loudly.
Aiden shrugged. "Oh, I wasn't too tired."
Ben gave him an incredulous look.
"Ok, well, I was sorta tired, but I couldn't go to sleep so I figured I'd do it."
He said it offhandedly, but there was clearly some sort of underlying message that he wasn't telling them. Taylor opened her mouth to say something, but Aiden cut her off. "Anyways, lets go! I'm gonna ask Ms. Higginbottom how big dogs can get!"
"So much for using the 'proper title for household pets'..."
"Yeah, you'd been a grumpis idiotus, Tyler."
"OI!"
And then they lived happily ever after, the end :33 (idk how to end this)
