Reminder that Juline canonically bitchslapped Mr. Forkle
He thought he was cool, bless his soul </3
thinking about how we’ve never seen mr. forkle’s true appearance
forkle’s identities require a truly ridiculous amount of suspension of disbelief, to the point where it’s probably a plot hole, because as we know, the elves track every single move every single citizen makes from basically birth. so if he only created his identities into adulthood, it should’ve appeared as though there were random elves popping up in the lost cities well into their lives, which should have raised some serious red flags with the council. and yet the council seems entirely clueless about who forkle could possibly be, so like. what’s going on
so the obvious theory is that he could have broken into the registry and created false registry files for his other identities and made it seem like they had real lives. but then this raises the question: shouldn’t they have like parents and family? friends? life details? how is he dealing with that? we know the registry tracks these things. and it still wouldn’t change the fact that the databases would’ve popped up randomly in the registry well into their adult lives. i guess his real identity could be kenric and he could have created the other identities after he became councillor, so that he could use kenric’s status as councillor to handwave any doubt, but it’s still extremely suspicious and makes very little sense in the context of the canon story
I am happiest when Sophie gets to commit arson abt her problems.
Still on my reread, just finished 8.5, AND GOT TO ONE OF MY FAV SCENES IN THE SERIES! Love that when Mr. Forkle finds out that Sophie burned down the storehouse, he’s like “we need to talk” and everyone’s mentally going “OoOoOoo” but then when he actually talks to her he’s like “You did the right thing, you just had a few logistical errors, so welcome to Arson 101, first rule—“
The Black Swan is the worst rebel organization I've heard of. Probably one of the worst examples of fictional rebel organizations. (Bit harsh, but still)
So apperantly the Black Swan was founded to better the elvin world, and solve the problems that faced it, which are (the following is a list of problems in the world, not nessacarily the ones the Black Swan wants to solve): the human conundrum, interspecial relations, the matchmaking system, stereotypes against twins, stereotypes against certain abilities like Shades and Pyrokinetics, the messed up justice system that sends 11yro's to fend for themselves, caches and the Council's lies, etc. But the thing is that the Black Swan absolutly fails at all of these things.
Apperantly, the Black Swan has been around for centuries, striving for centuries to fix the problems, led by Mr. Forkle and the Collective. In all this time, what have they actually done? Mabye it's justa problem with the books, but I can only think of one thing: Sophie Elizabeth Foster.
Ur telling me that in all these years, the only thing they've done is a genetic experiment? And they even kinda failed in that, as Sophie doesn't apply her human perspective to the world that much. Yes, most of that was Alden's fault, as Sophie was brought into the Elvin world way too early. (I know how unethical the whole thing was, bear with me) There is so much lacking in Sophie's view of the Elvin world and so much she doesn't understand. Shez less of a connection between humans and elves and more of warrior against the Neverseen.
Which brings us to somewhere else: honestly, Sophie should never had existed. Are you seriously telling me that the Black Swan is too dumb to figure out the problems of the world by themselves and need a child to point it out for them? Easy. Just ask the opressed peoples. Open honest dialouge with them. The Black Swan also don't even have a plan to solve the human conundrum, the thing Sophie was made for, and expect her to do it. They barely have a plan for anything, just in Keefe's words "expect her to solve milennias worth of problems without a plan". Ofc Sophie's existance is wonderful and amazing and Sophie is a great addition to the world. But the Black Swan's sole accomplishment was kinda unessacary.
The thing is, if the Neverseen hadn't speeded up the process, nothing would happen for a couple more centuries. Ofc, Sophie would make changes, but shez just a kid, and without the Neverseen, she'd probably belive a lot more of the Council's lies. Other than exposure to Dex and Marella and stuff. Without the Neverseen, Sophie would be fighting a losing battle. She'd either become one of those useless moderates like the Black Swan or she'd break from them completely (Shannon pls pls pls!).
What bugs me the most is that the Black Swan don't use the enormous resources and power they have. You control the children of the most powerful citizen's education? Do nothing. There are so many ways you can educate the kids to the problems. You have an ally on the Council? Don't make her speak up about the problems and instead allow her to ignore them. The Black Swan really is such a faaiiluure. (U r such a failure, sorry couldn't resist.)
The Black Swan, as a organization, don't seem to understand what's wrong with their world. Ofc induviduals do, but not the whole. The Black Swan, or atleast the leader, shows no empathy for other intelligent species. It wants the unfair status quo of elvin superiority to remain. It desires that all other species be subordinated, and unfortunatly, Sophie and co. seem to think so too. Honestly, at pre-Sophie Black Swan only seems to care abt matchmaking, twins, and the human conundrum, and only care abt humans cuz their existance puts elves at a disadvantage. And it has done nothing to solve the problems it cares abt other than Sophie. And honestly, I think it only cares about matchmaking bcuz of Timkin and Juline.
Honestly, most of the problems with the Black Swan come from it's less-than-stellar leadership in the form of Mr. Forkle. A lota ppl have already gone into depth about him, and why he sucks and how hez biased against the other intelligent species (like every1) and looked-down-upon abilities ppl and waywards. I think alot of the Black Swans problems could be fixed if this guy wasn't the leader.
Last point, is the Black Swan's goal. It doesn't understand how messed up the system is, and thus doesn't wanna change it. It wants to collaborate with the Council, slowly convince it to change. But this never works. Take the examples of the Moderates in the INC during Britisih rule in India. The Black Swan remind me of them. They try to convince the British, but ultimately, that approach failed. The Black Swan don't understand that they have to tear the system down.
The Neverseen work way better as a rebel organization. They actually do smth, they cause problems, they call attention. Ofc, they are terrorists, but don't say the Black Swan also isn't trash.
I am rereading KotLC, and I feel like the Black Swan seems so smart at first. But then it's not shown much throughout the books. They just feel vague and annoying. I feel like the others have a lot of potential, but I'm not feeling Mr. Forkle.
For one, i do not want to read about an old white man leader. I think it would be nice to see someone younger, even if just through portrayal, idk, who runs the cause. a little genius, perhaps.
