The Wayside cartoon adaptation of Mrs. Gorf is so weird. See, in the original books, the story takes place before Mrs. Jewls becomes the teacher of the 30th story, but Todd plays a major role in it, leading the charge in the apple rebellion and demanding she turn them all back into kids.
But in the Wayside CARTOON, Todd is the new kid in class, and Mrs. Jewls is already the teacher when he gets there. So when it's time for the show to adapt the story (itself a rarity in the series, which usually made original stories), it has two options:
Keep the pre-Mrs. Jewls angle and replace Todd's role in the story with someone else, likely one of the remaining main character students (Dana or Myron, but most likely Maurecia, the most action-oriented of the leads)
Have the story play out in the present day and make Mrs. Gorf a substitute teacher, keeping Todd's role as the big hero of the story
For some reason, the show tries to do BOTH, making Mrs. Gorf a substitute teacher for Mrs. Jewls who's still the main teacher, but ALSO having the story take place before Todd arrived at Wayside, presenting it as an in-universe flashback, and not only replacing his role as the story's good guy with Maurecia, but also making it her origin story???
Trying to have their cake and eat it too, I see.
