Do on screen hashtags work?

If you've watched any of this years Britain's Got Talent you will probably have noticed that there have been suggested hashtags flashing up on the screen throughout the programme. But do these really make a difference to a show's Twitter numbers or are they just a bit annoying.

Well it appears that they can indeed have an effect. Mr Zip's rendition of 'Where me keys, where me phone' was deemed worthy of two on screen hashtags and this helped create a peak of over 7000 tweets per minute, one of the highest levels we've ever seen. In fact over 10% of the show's tweets contained suggested hashtags.
